Matlock Town snap up ex-Championship striker Conor Washington

Matlock Town have made a stunning acquisition with the signing of Conor Washington ahead of the 2025/26 season. The 33-year-old forward makes the move to the Proctor Cars Stadium after two seasons with Derby County, where he made 19 appearances and scored three goals as the Rams secured promotion back to the Championship at the end of the 2023/24 season, before missing the whole of the 2024/25 campaign through injury. Washington, who began his career with St Ives Town, secured a deal with Newport County in 2012, spending two years at the club before joining Peterborough United. He netted 27 times in 85 appearances for the Posh, which included a first professional hat-trick in a 4-0 victory against Scunthorpe United. In 2016, Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers acquired the services of the striker for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. Washington went on to make 98 appearances and score 14 goals across four seasons at Loftus Road, before departing for Sheffield United in August 2018. He featured 15 times for the Blades as they won promotion to the Premier League at the conclusion of the 2018/19 season, departing for Scottish Premiership side Hearts of Midlothian for the following campaign, which was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent injuries. Washington joined League One side Charlton Athletic in August 2020, scoring on his debut against Crewe Alexandra. He departed the Addicks in May 2022 after scoring 22 times in 71 appearances for newly-promoted Championship outfit Rotherham United. Born in Kent, Washington qualified for Northern Ireland through a grandparent, and received his first international call-up in 2016, making his debut against Wales. Since then, he has made 43 appearances and scored 6 goals.
