Ilkeston change keepers. Frankie Shepherd gets to play the final ten minutes. This half has been totally different to the first. Good save by Flint keeper. Daniel gets a yellow for a robust challenge. Great skill by Walker creating an opportunity for himself but his shot is over the bar. Stevens has done well since coming on.

Might have been a pen for Flint but it's not given. Full time. 4-0

Many supporters are saying that the introduction of Stevens changed the game. He certainly showed some class moments . Ilkeston had very few chances in the first half but after Stevens came on, opportunities came thick and fast. He definitely made a case for being included in the starting lineup. Daniel was also excellent throughout and Essien gave a tireless performance.
As Ilkeston dominated the second half Youmbi came to life and got himself into several scoring positions. Yes, he missed a few by trying to make sure but credit to him for getting into so many good scoring positions. On another day he might have had a hat-trick. Wharton gave an assured performance in goal so overall the gloom of Carlton was lifted.
Walker playing on the wing meant we could attack on both sides rather than relying on Brandy. Finally, what a brilliant goal by young Kirby-Moore. He's going to be some player.

Scrappy first half but good second half performance today. Thought Jordan Stevens changed the game when he came on for the second half. He and Colin Daniels (left back today) just looked a class above everyone else. We scored a couple of goals and gained confidence and were cruising for the last half hour.
Speaking to Lee Fowler, he thought the top 2 teams in the Welsh Premier League would be in the bottom half of the Conference North league in England and the other teams would be Step 3. If today's anything to go by, I'd say more like Step 4.
Interesting that in the Welsh Premier League the ref and linesmen are mic'd up. Just wondered if Deaks might have got away with kicking the advertising boards in frustration, unfortunately the linesman was stood about 10 yards away and he told the ref and the ref came over and booked him.
Nice little ground but I think we expected more from a Welsh Premier league ground. Kinda like Long Eaton's ground, with one small stand over the halfway line down one side. Their average crowd last season was around 300. Next season, believe it or not, they will be using VAR at the ground for games. 2 extra cameras and 2 VAR officials at every game checking decisions.
Another interesting change the FAW are implementing is that Friday nights will be the new default fixture slot instead of the more traditional Saturday afternoons. Sounds like they've done it to avoid any clashes with English clubs.

I noticed that the linesman had a whistle like the referee.
I felt for the ref in the first half when he was under a lot of pressure due to tackles flying in from both sides.
He spent a fair amount of time explaining his decisions. something our referees would never do.

Pre-season friendly
Flint Town United 0 Ilkeston Town 4
Travelling to North Wales proved fruitful again for Ilkeston following previous wins against Airbus UK and Colwyn Bay. The competitive first half was littered with stoppages for free kicks but two quick goals after the restart put Ilkeston in control.
Flint created the first two openings. first a glanced header from a free kick was just wide, then Dylan Wharton was forced to save with an outstretched leg. Ilkeston replied through Dylan Youmbi who weaved his way into the area before seeing his effort saved. Genuine goal opportunities then dried up as both teams battled for physical supremacy.
The second half was much better on the eye. Ilkeston got off to flyer when Tom Marshall headed powerfully home from a corner on 49 minutes. Two minutes later the lead was doubled by Youmbi who provided the finish to a fine run and cross by Jordan Stevens. Youmbi nearly added another with a cracker inches wide. A free kick just outside of the Flint penalty area brought a fine save by the home keeper to deny Stevens as Ilkeston dominated. Flint’s keeper was unlucky when he saved Walker’s effort but saw a defender head into his own goal to make it 3-0 on 78 minutes. Three minutes after that came the goal of the game from Harvey Kirby-Moore whose shot from the edge of the area flew in via the post. Jamie Walker might have made it five after some great skill created the opportunity for himself but his effort flew over the bar.

The second half at Flint was easily Ilkeston's most impressive pre-season performance with numerous opportunities created and a clean sheet. We didn't see that coming after a very physical first half of very few chances. Versatile Colin Daniel played at left back allowing Jamie Walker to play on the wing and it worked well. Dylan Youmbi led the attack in place of injured Robbie Fox and got himself into several scoring positions. It was a good effort by all the players and Jordan Stevens in particular stood out when he came on for the second half.
It was a pity that Elliott Reeves was unfit to play. Several Flint supporters said that Reeves is their best player.
Based on that performance and with club captain Matt Thornhill missing the game, some of the Ilkeston squad are going to be disappointed when Ian Deakin chooses his first choice starting eleven.
Our next pre-season match will be a testing one at Basford and we need to build on the Flint performance.
We know pre-season is about trying things rather than getting results but it's less than 2 weeks now before the season starts at Morpeth on 9th August.

Best wishes to Lee Fowler and Flint Town United who made us very welcome yesterday. I think that Lee and Elliott shook hands and spoke with every person from Ilkeston. Their season proper starts next Saturday.

Really good day enjoyed by all who went to Flint. Another ground ticked off in very pleasant surroundings next to the River Dee estuary and Flint Castle. A few supporters made their own way including Alan Savage who travels to away matches by train. What a supporter.
Although Flint are a Welsh Premier League team, their nice little ground with 3g pitch is similar to many grounds at our level with very friendly officials and supporters. It proved to be a really competitive workout and a confidence boosting win with great goals by Tom Marshall, Dylan Youmbi and Harvey Kirby-Moore plus a comical own goal.
