Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town 2 Prescot Cables 0
A goal of spectacular quality by substitute L’Varn Brandy transformed the game from looking like a 0-0 to one which looked full of goals. Brandy picked up the ball from Sam Essien’s pass, some distance out. He advanced at speed and let fly a screamer into the far top corner of the net. Suddenly the game mood changed and Prescot’s hitherto secure defence conceded again a few minutes later when Dylan Youmbi scored from the spot after being bought down.
Cables first attempt on goal was by Francis Smith who tried to lob the ball over Dylan Wharton who was off his line but the Ilkeston keeper was able to pluck it out of the sky. Harvey Kirby-Moore replied for the Robins with an effort that was deflected wide. Matt Thornhill then saw his attempt palmed over by Calvin Hare. Anthony Donaldson then had a real chance for Cables in the box but couldn’t get his shot away. Sam Essien and Thornhill combined to create an opportunity for Robbie Fox who saw Hare push his low attempt round the post. Ilkeston came closest to scoring in the 40th minute when Connor Dixon’s almost perfect thunderbolt struck the post.
The second half started with defences on top until Wharton made a crucial save from Smith on the hour. Manager, Ian Deakin then made a triple substitution and one of them L’Varn Brandy was an instant success when he scored a sensational opener. Three minutes later the lead was doubled through Youmbi’s penalty after he was hacked down. Encouraged by the home support, Ilkeston pushed for more goals and Fox looked likely to oblige until Hare denied him with a fine save. Wharton was forced to save a header following a Cables corner but Hare was far busier and kept the score at 2-0 with another defiant save from Essien’s venomous blast from just inside the area. Man of the match Dylan Youmbi weaved his way into the area in the final minutes but his goal bound effort was deflected wide and Ilkeston had to settle for a two goal win.

What a difference a goal makes. And what a goal.
A really poor crowd today. What do we have to do to get more people to come to matches?
Then there's the growing tension regarding travel to away games.
With the Club experiencing falling receipts, Andy wants 20 people travelling on the team bus to reduce the club's travel costs.
The Supporters Group whose aim is to have a day out as well as going to the match, want more people on their bus.
Those travelling on the independently run Supporters Group bus give the team welcome vocal support at away games.
Travelling on the team bus helps the club to survive and progress.
We need both so we have to try to get more of our supporters travelling to away games with us.
Having said that, our home gates have fallen dramatically. Only 355 against Prescot sets alarm bells ringing
