Second half goals by Ashton’s Darius Osei and Enock Lusiama brought an end to Ilkeston’s unbeaten run. While Ilkeston had a fair share of possession it was Ashton who created the majority of scoring opportunities and ran out worthy winners. Acting manager Craig Swinscoe commented after the game “We have to bounce back. Everyone can beat everyone in this tough league.“ 

Ashton showed their intent early on when Lusiama tested Alfie Roberts with a powerful effort that the Ilkeston keeper did well to stop. There was a chance for Harvey Kirby-Moore to put Ilkeston ahead when Jordan Stevens won the ball and played him through but an Ashton defender denied him with a desperate last ditch tackle. Kirby-Moore had another opportunity but saw his shot blocked by visitors skipper Luke Burke. Mikey O’Neil’s shot with venom produced a good save by Roberts at the other end before Ilkeston had a lucky escape when Alex Byrne’s shot hit the post. Roberts parried the follow up before Colin Daniel was able to clear. Another chance fell to Ashton when Scott Burgess with time and space fired over the bar. An even first half ended goalless with the better chances falling to Ashton.  

Straight after the restart Roberts was called upon to keep out Osei’s effort. At the other end Daniel saw his effort charged down and Seth Okere’s follow up flew over the bar. On 55 minutes Ashton got the breakthrough goal when Osei lashed the ball across goal and into the net via the far post. Ilkeston replied with a thumping header from Sam Parker which was kept out by Jordan Eastham. A swift counter attack by Ashton ended with Lusiama giving them a two goal advantage. Ashton’s defenders were denying Ilkeston’s forwards any opportunities until Matt Thornhill finally got a shot off but Eastham was equal to it. Okyere had a chance late on but Ashton saw out time for a deserved win.
