The Cleethorpes pitch was passed fit for play after a late inspection but the clinging surface made it difficult for both sides and so it was no surprise that neither team could find a winning goal. Ilkeston probably edged the first half but had to withstand some heavy Cleethorpes pressure in the second period when the hosts racked up numerous corners. But Ilkeston defended well and keeper Alfie Roberts kept a third consecutive clean sheet. Ilkeston were closest to scoring through Jamie Walker who was denied by the woodwork.

Ilkeston started well but suffered an early blow when skipper Tom Marshall sustained an injury after 15 minutes and had to be replaced. Just before that, a Jordan Stevens through ball found the run of Dylan Youmbi but a strong challenge by Kwame Boateng on the edge of the area bought appeals for a foul which were dismissed. Cleethorpes then had a chance to open the scoring with a header by Callum Ainley which was just too high. Ilkeston responded with Sam Bird finding Youmbi on the overlap but his shot was well saved by Battersby at his near post. Another promising ilkeston move ended with Colin Daniel firing wide. Jamie Walker saw his shot saved by Battersby before Cleethorpes started to get on top just before half time. 

Cleethorpes striker Josh Walker forced Roberts into an early second half save then Callum Minkley did well to stop the threat of Billy Whitehouse. Ilkeston were so unlucky not to go ahead when Tyler Whyle found Jamie Walker whose shot came back off the post. After that Cleethorpes started to assert themselves and Ilkeston found themselves under aerial threat from multiple corners. Just before time Roberts rescued Ilkeston with a fine close range save as Cleethorpes pushed for a winner.
