Deaks summed up the afternoon well when he said what could have gone wrong, did go wrong. Who would have thought Leek would win after the first 15 minutes which Ilkeston dominated. But after scoring against the run of play Leek upped their game and turned the tide. They added another and Ilkeston needed the half time break to re-group. A quick goal after the restart by Sam Parker gave us hope of turnaround but just when we were getting on top Leek struck again. Worse was to follow when the ref saw Daniel retaliate after a Leek player had elbowed him. The officials only saw the retaliation and Daniel saw red. Against ten players Leek easily managed the remaining time.

Relegation fighters Leek Town took their chances and took the points against a below par ilkeston. Their opening goal came against run of play but goals change games and the tide turned. Matters got worse for Ilkeston when Colin Daniel saw red for a retaliation.
Ilkeston started strongly and Harvey Kirby-Moore was close to scoring with header from Dylan Youmbi’s cross but the ball hit the inside of the post and flew across the goal line. Next Matt Thorhill saw an initial attempt blocked and his followup saved by Dino Visser. As the pressure continued Sam Parker’s half volley was parried by Visser who then did well to deny Kirby-Moore a rebound. Leek created their first chance on 10 minutes when the speedy and powerful Tunde Owolabi blazed over. But on 16 minutes Leek were ahead following a corner. Ilkeston keeper Alfie Roberts found himself crowded out and the ball was bundled over the line by Cullen Meadowcroft. L’Varn Brandy saw his effort brilliantly saved by Visser before Leek swept upfield to grab a second through Connor Heath on the half hour. Just before half time an outstanding save by Roberts prevented Owolabi from adding a third.
A half time team talk seemed to have worked when Parker headed home Jamie Walker’s corner four minutes in. The momentum was back with ilkeston as they pushed for a leveller with Youmbi the instigator of most attacks. Brandy saw his shot blocked and Walker’s shot was too high but it was the visitors who struck again on 59 minutes. Roberts couldn’t hold on to Connor Heath’s initial attempt and the Leek forward made sure with his followup. The blow was compounded when two minutes later Daniel was dismissed and Ilkeston’s fate was sealed. The Robins tried hard to rescue the situation with a player short but Leek held on with tactics not always appreciated by the home fans but who could blame them. For Leek it was a much needed three points.
