Stocksbridge Park Steels 0 Ilkeston Town 0
Manager Ian Deakin rested several senior players and goalkeeper Mitchell Leivers returned to replace suspended Alfie Roberts. But Ilkeston’s stop go season continued and they could only draw with now relegated Stocksbridge and to make matters worse Tom Marshall saw red in added time after coming on as a substitute.
Steels had wind advantage in the first half but neither side looked likely to score and the best opportunities came from corners. Colin Daniel fired wide following a Jamie Walker corner on 10 minutes and a Steels corner almost brought a goal following a scramble on the Ilkeston goal line. L’Varn Brandy got past keeper Ben Townsend on the left side of goal but a defender was able to rescue the situation. A great forward pass by Taylor Anderson sent Jay Abudu clear but his dangerous cross was cut out. A Steels corner had to be turned behind by Leivers just before half time.
Ilkeston started the second half well with an early chance for Brandy followed by a Marshall volley over the bar. On the hour there was a big chance for Robbie Fox racing forward but he delayed his shot and the opportunity was lost. There followed a strong Steels penalty appeal when a forward went down in the area but the referee decided that it was a dive and showed him a yellow card. Steels were threatening on the break and Ilkeston were indebted to Leivers for a fine save ten minutes from time. Steels then had a good free kick opportunity. The wall stopped the original shot and Leivers held onto the follow up. Steels threw caution to the wind in the final moments and keeper Townsend came up for a corner. When the ball was cleared, Sam Essien had a chance to win it for Ilkeston from the half way line but his effort towards the unprotected goal was slightly off target.

Deaks said he was proud of the players but in my opinion it was a dire performance against a relegated team. Leivers looked very nervous early on and was guilty of a couple of mishandlings but he did recover as the game went on. The first half was an especially poor watch with hardly a shot on goal. The second half was an improvement. It had to be. But we were still unable to beat a very poor Stocksbridge. Had Essien found the empty net from the halfway line at least we would have got a win. Regarding the sending off, it started from nothing and was just a bit of shoving before others joined in. I couldn’t see how Marshall was involved but the ref and lino did confer before reaching their decision. Marshall now misses the FC United game.
