Tomorrow is the first day of the 2026 World Cup.It is now 60 years since I watched my first World Cup in 1966, England drew nil nil with Uruguay, in a turgid opening game of a tournament that is etched in to the memory of all fans of a certain age.
The 2026 tournament will be dominated no doubt by the US of A or more accurately Donald Trump. The fans, officials and referees that have not been allowed into the land of the free may be only minor matter if Donald Trump lives up to his attention seeking reputation and does completely ridiculous.
Closer to home this is the first World Cup with a former Ilkeston Town player representing one of the competing countries. Che Adams, if selected will be closely watched by all the Ilkeston Town faithful who remember his stunning goal against FC United Manchester, all those years ago, was it Salford city?
In this blog, I intend to keep a regular watch all that is happening in the World Cup and hopefully reporting on an England victory by mid July however, if this does not happen, at least I can have a good moan about how we have been robbed again.

I think the cheating , faking injuries will get me fuming again . Will I watch any games , I suppose I will . Years ago I would be well up for the games but now not so much .

There will be loads that get me fuming but I love a good moan especially if England don’t do well. So far though I am quite upbeat as I got the correct result in the first game in our family prediction league. I did watch the game with a glass of red wine and quite enjoyed it. The Aztec Stadium bought back memories of the 1970 World Cup, Pele, Banks and all that. Fifty six years ago I can still remember going round to my mate Johnny Randall’s house to watch Englands game against Brazil on a colour Television. The shock of the game being in colour took my attention away from the game of football although I do remember Banks save from Pele.
So it’s ‘so far so good’ for me. However Scotland and England still have plenty of time to screw it up so I wait with baited breath foe the stress levels to rise.

well true to my comments on cheating and fake injuries it has happened in the FIRST game ... Three red cards !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes you are right there was some very odd decisions from the referee who looked to be a bit stressed about officiating in the opening game!

How many former Ilkeston players have played at the World Cup? I though, maybe, Kenny Burns... but no.
Maybe just Che Adams then...?
Good luck the to the 'lad'.... (but mostly to England). I did watch the 1966 Final too!
That said, it's (probably not) coming home - again - but I fancy we will go deep! I've gone for 2-2 -v-Croatia.

Kenny Burns did play in the 1978 World Cup but was not a former Ilkeston Town player at that point!

Just watched the canads game . It was actually a good game BUT the fake diving and fake injuries were still there to see . I was actually laughing ..... Is this what modern football is all about now . And what gets me no one mentions it ........honestly if I was a puntdit on the tv I would Annalise the game plus the shame all the players in diving and faking injury ...

I watched the Canada Bosnian game and I thought although both teams were below average the game was quite entertaining. I noticed when I awoke this morning that somebody actually got booked diving in the USA Paraguayan game. Apparently Amorim had WON the foul but after an intervention by VAR he was booked for diving. Brilliant! VAR 1 The Dark Arts 0!

Just watched Switzerland v Qatar. It was boring because it was so one sided. Switzerland missed so many chances it was ridiculous and the goal they did score from the penalty spot, looked like offside should have been given. But when you don’t take your chances more often than not, you get punished and Qatar scored a very late equaliser.
Brazil v Morocco next then Haiti v Scotland. I’m staying up to watch Che Adams our Ilson hero. I so want him to do well. Pizza in the oven.

How did Che get on? I briefly thought about staying up but fell asleep. I saw the goal and Che had a big say in it I think. I am starting to find it difficult top keep up with the vast number of games. I suppose I wont feel the World cup has really started till England play on Wednesday.
I am watching Holland and Japan and the Dutch are on top but are not creating many chances so we could have the scoreless draw on our hands!

With the games coming thick and fast and still 84 to go I am finding this bloated World Cup a bit overwhelming. Its is not easy to explain to non football fans that it is a tournament to find the best team in the World and Italy are not in it and Curacoa are. I then say its about growing the game and show casing the best in the world. I am then asked why is it in America and then I have to get a bit closer to the truth. The truth is that it is also about money! Anything wrong with this tournament usually has happened because money and lots of it dictate how things work (or dont)! Thats Wednesday rant over.
In the family prediction league and I am fourth (that is fourth out of four so bottom). I console myself by remembering there are still 84 games to go.
Tonight is the big one and we have a bit of a family gathering to watch the game. I have predicted England to draw but I would love it this time to be wrong. Like all England fans who have suffered sixty years of hurt I have that foreboding that it is all going to go terribly wrong! Again I hope I am wrong!

Well I couldn't believe it last night . I didn't that England were winning one nil as I set off from work to home . But omg as soon as walked through the bloody door Croatia scored . Sio I switched off a I thought it was all my fault lol .
Seen the score later so watched the highlights this morning . Like most fans are saying we look really good going forward but without swearing we look well dogdy at the back

The second half performance restored my faith in England’s ability to win big games. We could have won 6 of 7-2 if their keeper had not had such a good game. In the first half I thought England were far too nervous and I ended screaming at the telly every time Pickford started trying to do a Beckenbaur with the ball at his feet. Tommy Tuckle apparently made a speech at half time and whatever he said did the trick as England took Croatia apart in the first fifteen minutes after half time. There was some good performances like Harry Kane but I thought Elliot Anderson was excellent and his forward pass made the third and decisive goal.
So in summary I did put my England flag up and I did not have to hide it sharply after full time and yesmy prediction was wrong! And yes I am bottom of the prediction league by even more points bug when England win like that, who cares! Bring on Ghana!

Yes a good second half performance by England but they were lucky with the penalty.
We can’t have a missed penalty against Harry Kane’s name. Let him take it again.
I’ve always thought that keepers should be allowed to move. And many penalty takers wait for the keeper to move before taking the kick..

I think they are allowed to move left or right but not forwards off of their line. If you allowed that there is nothing to stop some cheeky keeper standing a yard away from the penalty spot. You are right though it is rare for officials to pick up on a keeper moving too early or a player encroaching. It is good if they are consistent!

Well I have finally started to get some predictions right and have moved off the bottom of the table. Mexico v South Korea, USA v Australia, Scotland v Morocco and Brasil v Haiti were all predicted correctly so I am noe feeling like an expert. I know this may not last long but I am going to bask whilst I am on a run. I must admit I did not want USA to win as I find it difficult to be positive about their president and I was hoping to be wrong with Scotlands prediction. Going down after 70 odd seconds made me fear it was going to go very badly wrong. I only watched the first half but I felt for ex Robin Che Adams as he could not put a foot right and I get the impression he did not fair much better in the second half.
I am now settling down to watch Holland and Sweden which should be one of the closest games so far!

Half time England 1-0 down and the next 45 are massive! Turn it round and we can beat anyone lose and the reality is we are not good enough! At my age we are starting to run out of chance to recreate the 66 feel! Maybe I will post in an hours time with a completely different story!
