These sort of games don’t come round very often and didn’t everyone make the most of it. We were the underdogs. We had no chance. But what a performance. What a game. Sam Wilson kept us in it with some outstanding saves. The team grew in confidence and when it could have gone either way it was us who grabbed the winner. Unconfined joy when the full time whistle was blown.

Ilkeston Town FC

Lyndon Joyce’s late winner meant Ilkeston Town secured a dramatic 1-0 win on the opening day of the Northern Premier League season against Stockton Town at the Microlise New Manor Stadium.
The visitors forced the first opening of the afternoon with 5 minutes gone, as Jake Petitjean called Sam Wilson into action, where he made a smart stop to his left.
Ash Hunter fashioned the Robins’ first chance after 11 minutes, driving through the middle of the box before he fired an effort high above the bar.
Tris Whitman’s new look Ilkeston outfit grew into the game as the midway point of the half dawned, excellently containing Stockton, who posed plenty of questions.
Heroics from Wilson kept the Robins level going into half-time, as he acrobatically denied a goal-bound effort from Layton Watts from 18 yards out after 43 minutes.
The first chance of the second 45’ fell to Ilkeston through Hunter, who drew a free kick after being halted by the Stockton defence, however he was only able to strike his effort way above the target.
The visitors nearly broke the deadlock just after the hour mark as Joshua Scott headed over from point blank range.
The Robins had the frame of the goal to thank with 10 minutes remaining as Thomas Coulthard struck an effort onto the inside of the post, which Ilkeston managed to scramble clear.
As the second half came to a close, Ilkeston ramped up the pressure on their opponents, creating a host of good openings which they could not take.
However, at the death, the Robins secured the three points in incredible fashion, as Joyce converted from close range with the last kick of the game.
Ilkeston will return to league action on Tuesday, August 11th as they travel to face Emley at the Fantastic Media Welfare ground looking to secure back-to-back wins.

MATCH REPORT | ILKESTON TOWN 1-0 STOCKTON TOWN
Stockton Town fell to a harsh defeat on opening day at the hands of Ilkeston Town.
Lynden Joyce’s winner deep into stoppage time broke the hearts of the travelling Anchors fans.
Michael Dunwell named both Jaedon Faulkner and Thomas Birtles into the starting lineup after the pair impressed against Middlesbrough U21’s last week. The Anchors started the much better side, Josh Scott testing Sam Wilson’s diving ability within the opening five minutes.
Veteran Ashley Hunter had a dangerous opportunity for the hosts when he unleashed a powerful effort from distance that flew just over Nathan Harker’s crossbar.
Before the break, Layton Watts magically took on two defenders before curling a strike towards goal which had to be met by the fingertips of Sam Wilson.
Half-time: Ilkeston Town 0-0 Stockton Town
Adam Nicholson was forced off after the first half, which gave Aaron Brown a competitive debut.
After Scott saw a curling strike over the bar, Layton Watts, who impressed on his debut, picked him out again with a perfect left-footed cross but the forward’s header was too high.
Tom Coulthard thought he’d given the Anchors the lead on the 80-minute mark, but his prodded effort rebounded off the inside of the post before being cleared.
Lewis King was on high alert to clear a header that had beaten Nathan Harker, and as it looked as though that had secured a clean sheet, a long throw-in deep into stoppage time caused problems for the Stockton backline, which Lynden Joyce punished by powering past Harker to win the game for Ilkeston.

All attention now turns to the Anchors’ home opener at the MAP Group UK Stadium on Tuesday, when they welcome Ashton United.
