If Walsall Wood win their next four games it will mean that when they entertain Ilkeston Town they will only need a point to clinch the title. If Ilkeston Town drop any points before this game Walsall Wood will have won the title before this date. If we beat Walsall Wood on the 24th and they have already amassed 100 points they will only need to avoid very heavy defeats in each of their remaining games to be crowned Champions owing to their vastly superior goal difference.

If Walsall Wood win all of their remaining matches including the match against Ilkeston they will have 113 points and the most points we could get is 97. (a winning margin of 16 points)
I think the closest we can finish to Walsall Wood is if both ourselves and Racing Club beat them. I don't think they will drop points in any of their other remaining fixtures. If this happens then Walsall Wood will finish with 107 points and the maximum points Ilkeston can get is 100 points. (a winning margin of 7 points)

They will be worthy winners have they have swept aside all contenders except Ilkeston Town often beating good teams by sizeable margins. I think the title will be almost if not already decided by the time we play them and it will be a case of congratulating them on their achievement. We need to ensure we secure second place!

Walsall Wood's 8 remaining matches are :
Sat 14 Apr Pershore Town away
Tue 17 Apr Studley away )
Sat 21 Apr R C Warwick home ) Wins in these 3 key games would give the title to Walsall Wood
Tue 24 Apr Ilkeston Town home )
Thu 26 Apr Bolehall Swifts home
Sat 28 Apr Paget Rangers home
Sat 05 May Nuneaton Griff home
T B A Cadbury Athletic home
They also have two big Cup games to pull in:
Thu 19 Apr Sporting Khalsa
Tue 1 May R C Warwick
If they were to lose four on the bounce (Studley, Sporting Khalsa, R C Warwick and Ilkeston) it could unnerve them and be a close finish. Paget Rangers and Nuneaton Griff are no pushovers. On the other hand they are good enough to win the lot.

Walsall Wood are Champions if they win today against Racing Club Warwick. 98 points is the required total and a win would give them that 98 points. A draw would give them 96 points and they would then need a draw in their next game against Ilkeston. If they lose to both RCW and Ilkeston they will still be Champions eventually but it would be nice to keep them hanging on as long as possible.

Last night Walsall Wood lifted the Polymac Packaging League Cup by beating Coleshill of the MFL Premier Division by 2-1. Coleshill finished second in the Premier Division so it looks like Walsall Wood are good enough to challenge for promotion again next season. Bearing in mind that Ilkeston beat them twice, this indicates that if we were fortunate enough to get placed at step 5 next season through the restructuring programme then we too may be good enough to challenge for another promotion to step 4. This is wishful thinking of course and it is more more likely that we will be playing at step 6 in the East Midlands Counties League.

Tonight Walsall Wood met Northern Premier League Rushall Olympic in the Walsall Senior Cup final. The game ended 2-2 and Rushall won after penalties . Nevertheless an excellent effort by Walsall Wood to take their Step 3 opponents to penalties. Rushall finished 8th in the Northern Premier League.

It just goes to prove that the Midland Football League Division One is one of the toughest step 6 leagues to win. The standard appears to be much higher than any other step 6 league. Makes our achievement in our first ever season even greater!

Walsall Wood's season came to an end on Saturday when they lost to Wolverhampton Sporting 3-1 in the semi-final of the J W Hunt Cup. I think that if they can keep the same players for next season they could get promoted again to step 4. It's a pity we didn't get promoted with them into the MFL Premier Division.

On Walsall Wood's website, supporters are being asked where they think Wood will finish in the league this coming season. This is how the poll stands at the moment :
Champions 59%
Top Six 18%
Mid Table 23%
Relegation Battle 0%
Interesting that 59% are confident that they can replicate last season but 23% think they will only finish midtable.
