Re: Belper United v Ilkeston : Updates (Tomorrow Wed 7th Nov)

I watched them last season against Kimberley and they were awful! They should be more of a test than some other teams we might have faced but I have noticed that Pinxton have still not dropped a point in the CML South Division. Ive spoken to fans who like me thought the Belper game was tonight as midweek Ilson footie is always on a Wednesday!!

Another Ilkeston corner. Chance for Fyfe but he fires wide. Once again Ilkeston can't convert chances. About 4 minutes left.

Full time  Belper United 3  Ilkeston 1

Awful first half cost us the game. Much better in the second half but there was too much to do.  Still plenty of chances but again not converted.  Belper worthy winners on the night.

Re: Belper United v Ilkeston : Updates (Tomorrow Wed 7th Nov)

Match Summary

Ilkeston made eight changes to their starting lineup as Martin McIntosh gave several squad players the opportunity to press for a first team place. The manager was then left frustrated by a very poor opening period in which Belper scored three times in the first 18 minutes. First Jim Rushby followed up a shot from Matt Adcock which Jamie Hannis couldn't hold. Five minutes later Chris Shaw slipped and Rushby set up Ryan Baker who made it 2-0. On 18 minutes Rushby struck again placing a superb header into the top corner from a right wing cross. Belper were looking capable of scoring more while Ilkeston struggled to create any meaningful opportunities. Ilkeston did manage to stem the tide in the last 15 minutes but the damage was done and Belper had a three goal interval lead. Ilkeston made three half time changes and it had an immediate impact as they gained the initiative and Belper were forced to defend.Tim Hopkinson pulled on back on the hour with a header and the comeback looked a possibility. Ilkeston went close on several occasions but a combination of wastefulness, bad luck and good defending meant they couldn't get the second goal that probably would have brought about a frantic finish

Re: Belper United v Ilkeston : Updates (Tomorrow Wed 7th Nov)

My after match thoughts :

There was plenty of criticism of Martin McIntosh's decision to make so many changes to the starting lineup but it's easy to be wise with the benefit of hindsight. Many of last night's team had been asking why they had been overlooked so far. You have to be fair to squad players and give them game time when possible. The team that played so poorly in the first half should have done better and they knew it.  But give Belper some credit as they were really up for it. This match did look like a perfect opportunity to include few squad players. Result wise it proved to be a mistake but while you want to win every game, going out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup wasn't the worst competition to be eliminated from. We are still in the FA Vase and the League Cup and most supporters would prefer make to progress in these two competitions. Going back to the performance against Belper United the Ilkeston  players did not look happy when they trooped off. They were upset and embarrassed at letting the Club and supporters down, so much so that none of them wanted to take part in an after match player interview. Martin McIntosh certainly let them know how he felt. Lessons have been learned. We now have to remember what went wrong in this match and make amends in the next one.
