Ilkeston Town v Worcester City : Live updates

If you are unable to get to the match you can follow the games progress here from 3pm.
Our opponents Worcester City lie 8th in the MFLPremier Division but make no mistake they are one of the strongest sides.  They lost their opening two fixtures against Boldmere St Michaels and Romulus but since then they have only lost four times, winning eleven and drawing eight. Seven  of their eleven wins have been away from home and their away record is one of the best in the league (Won 7 Drawn 2 Lost 4). If only some of their eight draws had been turned into wins then Worcester would be in a much more challenging position especially as six of the eight draws were from home games. Ilkeston know how good City can be from their 3-0 drubbing in the away fixture so today’s match is going to be a real battle with both teams seeing it as a must win game. Ilkeston have only lost two home games and City have only lost 4 away games. Worcester will feel that a late promotion challenge is not beyond them and Ilkeston need the points to keep alive their ambitious hopes of successive promotions.

Mitchell has to rush out to collect. Good City move ends with Birley's shot going wide. Long range effort from Forsyth is too high. Now Gilder has to race out and clear.     0-0   7 minutes

What a chance for Lockett. Looked like he should have scored but it's wide with Ilkeston players appealing for offside. Good spell for Worcester. Good save by Gilder from Walker. City so close. Mitchells parry hits another City player and goes inches wide.       0-0    26 minutes

Great chance for Marshall but he fails to connect. Worcester are now time wasting whenever they can. Bennet has to head away danger as City threaten.     0-1    75 minutes

Re: Ilkeston Town v Worcester City : Live updates

Goal    Elliott Reeves   76 minute     1-1.    Goal seemingly out of nothing.

The way I saw it .   Reeves got possession of the ball in the City area but not facing goal. He turned and made space for a shot and it was in the net before the defenders or keeper could react. A real striker's goal.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Worcester City : Live updates

Tom Marshall scores in 94th minute        2-1

It was a cross fom the left which found it's way into the top right hand corner of the net as players from both sides desperately tried to get on the end of it. It was like the Ilkeston supporters sucked it in and the result was absolute euphoria and the loudest goal cheer at the NMG for a long time.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Worcester City : Live updates

Something's happened in the dugouts.

Apparently when Tom Marshall scored the winner the Ilkeston players on the bench ran on to pitch in celebration. The Worcester bench didn't like it and tried to get the Ilkeston players cautioned for encroachment.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Worcester City : Live updates

Had to feel a bit of sympathy for Worcester. There's nothing worse than a last gasp defeat but from our point of view there's no better feeling than scoring a late winner. Yesterday's result really made up for the 0-3 away defeat when we felt that we were on the wrong end of some decisions.  Worcester are a very decent side and will no doubt feel unlucky. In my opinion they should be higher up the league than they are. The two extra points that we gained may well prove vital come the end of the season. Having now recovered my composure I've added a few extra bits to my updates.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Worcester City : Live updates

Sat 26th January 2019 -   Midland Football League  Premier Division
Ilkeston Town  2  Worcester City  1
A sensational goal by Tom Marshall deep into added time won the points for Ilkeston in dramatic fashion against a very good Worcester City side. Jordan Harrison had given the visitors a lead they probably deserved before Elliott Reeves equalised. Ilkeston’s last ditch victory avenged a 3-0 defeat in the away fixture earlier in the season. The visitors started strongly and an incisive move ended with Matt Birley’s shot going wide. City could have gone ahead on 15 minutes but Liam Mitchell saved bravely at the feet of Liam Lockett. The same player had an even better chance five minutes later but put the ball wide when he looked certain to score. Ilkeston were creating chances too but Hollis and Meikle both failed to hit the target with acceptable opportunities. Ilkeston had a lucky escape when Ethan Moran’s close range blast was instinctively deflected by Mitchell and the ball cannoned narrowly wide off City’s top scorer Jordan Harrison. Ilkeston then went close themselves. First Tom Marshall rattled the crossbar with a terrific shot from distance and then Lavell White created an opportunity for Reeves in the six yard box which the striker failed to convert. It was very much down to the two outstanding keepers that there were no goals before half time. Worcester had probably edged the first half so it was not entirely unexpected when they took the lead in the second half. Lockett did well to create space for a shot which was turned in on the line by Harrison on 58 minutes. Sam Gilder brilliantly tipped over Tom Marshall’s free kick as the Robins looked for a quick reply. Reece Fyfe, who was having plenty of success down the left flank nearly played in Reeves but Gilder raced out to clear in the nick of time. On 76 minutes Reeves produced a quality equaliser. He received the ball in the penalty area with his back to goal but skilfully manoeuvred himself into position and found the corner of the net with a real striker’s finish. That was the turning point in the game when Ilkeston seized control and pressed hard for a winner. Worcester were on the back foot and hanging on grimly as the game entered its closing stages. With just two minutes of normal time remaining the toiling visitors were reduced to ten players when Josh Willis received a straight red for a foul on Reeves as he was racing clear towards goal. In a gripping climax Ilkeston grabbed the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Following a short corner by the clocktower stand, Tom Marshall fired the ball across the goal and it found a way through a packed goalmouth and flew into the far top corner of the net. The goal was greeted with euphoric scenes behind the goal as well as by the Ilkeston players. It was an electrifying finish to a terrific match and the two extra points gained may prove to be vital come the end of the season.

From Worcester City's pont of view the winning goal was a cruel blow and the least they deserved was a point.
