Semi final v Romulus - Live Updates

It's another big match this Saturday with a chance to reach the League Cup Final.  This is massive but I can't help thinking that getting promotion is more important. Most supporters would probably go along with that but there's no reason why we shouldn't win both. In a way the cup match is a welcome relief from the unrelenting pressure of the promotion race. It's going to be a really difficult game as Romulus are enjoying an 8 game unbeaten run. Like us Romulus are also involved in a desperate battle for league points. For them it's about pulling away from the relegation places. Romulus will have the advantage of playing on their own artificial pitch. Ilkeston need to produce their home form in an away match.  Tim Hopkinson is back and we have a very strong squad,  We can do it.

Re: Semi final v Romulus - Live Updates

Nothing from Romulus attack so far. Spoke too soon. Mitchell has to punch clear. Walker robbed when about to shoot.  Ilkeston are having far more possession .      0-0    14 minutes

Re: Semi final v Romulus - Live Updates

Terrific run by Reeves down the left but keeper saves at the near post. The strong wind is in Romulus's favour this half.   GOAL Romulus.  Long ball misjudged and leaves Lukes Keen with Mitchell to beat and he takes his chance.      0-1     27 minutes

Ilkeston shot hits post with keeper rooted. Not sure who it was.  Romulus players are going down at every opportunity.  But credit where due they are defending for their lives.     0-2      81 minutes

Re: Semi final v Romulus - Live Updates

We are still riding our luck with results . Surely it's not the way to win a league just own form alone . I know the players know this but with two away games which could mean no points . Worrying .......

Re: Semi final v Romulus - Live Updates

This is my match report. I can't help thinking it sounds very biased. It's goals that count and good luck to Romulus in the final.

Sat 16th March 2019  -  Midland Football League Cup Semi Final
Romulus  2  Ilkeston Town  0
Ilkeston’s winless run away from home stretched to seven games and they missed out on a place in the League Cup final after conceding two first half goals. The first was unfortunate from Ilkeston’s point of view as the strong wind played a part in it. A big kick out of the Romulus goalmouth appeared to be misjudged by Tom Marshall and Luke Keen was able to take advantage and lob the ball past Liam Mitchell. By contrast, the second goal was an excellent header by Ethan Delaney which went in off the near post. Ilkeston fought hard to retrieve the situation but despite having the lion’s share of possession they had no luck where it mattered ie in front of goal.  Elliott Reeves had the ball in the net after only two minutes following a free kick but was flagged offside. Two minutes later Jamie Walker broke free down the left but his cross shot landed the wrong side of the crossbar. On 15 minutes Reeves burst through the Roms defence but Reiss Wagstaff clung on to his shot. Right against the run of play Romulus went ahead with their wind assisted goal on 23 minutes. Keen couldn’t believe his luck when he found himself free but he took the opportunity well. Kyle Dixon tested Wagstaff with a volley then on 32 minutes Walker and Reeves combined only for Reeves’s shot to go inches wide. Mitchell saved well from Delaney at the other end but on 39 minutes Ilkeston found themselves two down. Romulus wide player Ryan Winwood did really well, crossed from the right and Delaney scored with a perfectly placed header. Romulus had another chance when Tom Marshall was forced to deliberately handle the ball for which he received a yellow card. Just before half time Ilkeston had a real chance to pull one back when an excellent head high cross by Reece Fyfe was just out of Reeves’s reach two yards out.  Soon after the restart Ilkeston had another big opportunity. First there was a confident penalty shout when Walker went down under challenge in the area. The referee waved away the appeals but the loose ball fell to Fyfe about 10 yards out. With more time than he realised, Reco blazed over. Ilkeston had another penalty rejected for what looked like a clear hand ball. The Robins were doing all the pressing but a good break by Romulus saw Theo Llewellyn test Mitchell. On 59 minutes a Walker shot was deflected for a corner and could easily have  gone in. Romulus then had to endure a succession of corners but they resisted all of Ilkeston’s efforts.  A Romulus defender headed off the line as Ilkeston continued to press. Wagstaff saved from both Billy Bennett and Reeves before Jermain Hollis’s shot from outside of the area hit the base of the post with the keeper rooted to the spot.  Ilkeston desperately needed some kind of a lucky break and it wouldn’t come. Romulus keeper Reiss Wagstaff had an inspired afternoon but five minutes from time he was lucky to stay on the field following what looked like a forehead in the face of Alex Marshall. Romulus saw out the game with the usual tactics but In the end Ilkeston paid the price for not taking the numerous chances that came their way. The difference between Ilkeston’s home and away performances remains a mystery.
