Matches Saturday 31st August 2019

Cleethorpes Town v Loughborough Dynamo
Leek Town v Sutton Coldfield Town

If we win at Chasetown then 8 points from our opening 5 league games is a fair return. If we were to lose against Chasetown, then 5 points from 5 matches is a disappointing return.

Chasetown's crowds are about 185ish. They had won their first two against lower opposition but came unstuck against Loughborough Dynamo. They finished thirteenth last season so will be hoping to improve on that. Could be a chance for us to get our first three points away from home but personally I would happy with a point and a solid performance. The last I went to their ground was in the nineties during the West Midlands League days and I recall Alex Millership and his mates sneaking over the non existed fence to get in free. It made me laugh because as he was the chairmans son he would not have to have paid anyway.

Looks like the ground will be good for the fans who like to sing a bit .

Despite not being at their best, Ilkeston eased to 2-0 victory at Chasetown. It was a game in which both defences dominated and there were few scoring chances. In the end, two goals by Alex Marshall, one of them a penalty, gave Ilkeston the points and lifted them to seventh place in the league.
Ilkeston started the stronger but it took until the 11th minute before going close to scoring. Marshall turned the ball goalwards leaving the keeper stranded but his effort was cleared off the line. Ilkeston went ahead on 19 minutes after Chasetown keeper Curtis Pond flattened dangerman Kevin Bastos in the penalty area. Marshall drove the spot kick down the middle as Pond dived to his right. Chasetown fought back but it took until five minutes before half time before they came close to finding an equaliser. The opportunity came from a free kick 30 yards out, when a flicked header was just too high as Chasetown finished the half with a flourish.
The hosts started the second half strongly but struggled to create anything against a resolute Ilkeston defence in which Tyreece Robinson and Dean Freeman stood firm. Ilkeston new boy, Fernando Bell-Toxtle fired too high and Cameron Dear had a shot saved before Ricky Bridge came nearest to creating a Chasetown reply after a determined run on 73 minutes. Ten minutes from time Ilkeston's win was assured when Marshall scored his second. His first shot from inside the area hit the post but came back to him and he made no mistake at the second attempt. Defender Michael Townsend nearly pulled one back for Chasetown but headed just wide from a corner. IIkeston thought that they may have been awarded a second penalty in added time but a free kick was given the other way and this was followed swiftly by the full time whistle.

not pretty a game but a hard fought win plus a bonus of a clean sheet . Thought they were terrified of Batas all as he worked hard down the right . At the end I really thought he should got a penalty as he got bundled over . Batas in the second half had to onto the left as Lavell came on and he was just as good down the left .
Alex had a good game although he had to play against a lump of a defender who very good., but Alex`s credit he stuck at it.
like I say not pretty game but a well deserved win ….

I spoke to the Chairman of Chasetown on Saturday at the match. He is also the Chairman of the Midland Football League. He told me that he and the Midland Football League Executives were very disappointed that there were no representatives from Ilkeston Town at the end of season Presentation Night. He said it was the first time ever that the Premier Division winners had not been represented and been there to collect their awards.
I tried to explain to him our situation at the time which I don't think he really appreciated. The Presentation Night took place after Anthony Redwood had left the Club and at the time we had no Chief Operating Officer in his place causing a breakdown in communications inside the Club. It was also the time when it was disclosed that the Club had lost a lot of money and Alan Hardy could no longer finance the Club at the same level. In other words, the very future of the Club was in doubt.
The Midland Football League chairman said that Ilkeston Town should still have been represented and he was right. We should have made the effort. I think my apologies fell on stoney ground.
