Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

Over the last eight matches Ilkeston and Sheffield are both in the bottom 3 of the form table.  Only Wisbech (who we play after Sheffield) have a worse points score.

Ilkeston’s record over the last 8 matches is     Won 1, Drawn 1, Lost 6    Points 4
Sheffield’s record over the last 8 matches is    Won 0, Drawn 5, Lost  3   Points 5

When the teams met at Dronfield on 5th October Ilkeston were fortunate to win by 3-2 with a very late winner. Lady Luck smiled on us that day so maybe it’s Sheffield’s turn to be lucky. On the other hand Ilkeston have not had much luck since then. The teams are 10th and 11th in the league table and both teams are desperate for a win. so it should be a close contest

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

I'm going for a 8-8 draw. With Sheffield being 8-0 up at half time and Alex will miss a penalty in the last seconds of the match

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

Here are Sheffields's last eight league results in most recent order  (no wins)  :

          Jan 11 Cleethorpes     (A)  lost    0-2
          Jan 4   Stocksbridge   (H)  drew  2-2
          Jan 1   Leek                (A)  lost    0-4
          Dec 26  Belper            (H) drew  1-1
          Dec 21  Newcastle      (A)  lost   0-3
          Dec  7   Kidsgrove      (A)  drew  3-3
          Nov 23  Wisbech         (A) drew  2-2
          Nov 16  Spalding         (A) drew  2-2

Sheffield are probably in a false position in the league table because out of their 21 games played only 8 have been at home due to postponements

Their away record isn’t bad :  Played 13,  Won  4,  Drawn 4,  Lost 5.

So a draw does look a likely outcome

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

The goal has buoyed up Sheffield as they look for a second. Almost another Sheffield goal. Then they hit the crossbar. Ilkeston are rocking.         0-1     23 minutes

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

Ilkeston can't cope with the Sheffield forwards. Cross comes over and Durrant can't hold it but Ilkeston eventually clear. Saving header by Robertson. Sheffield look dangerous every attack. Dunne fires wide. Wells shot is too high for Ilkeston.            0-1     32 minutes

Chance for Sheffield at the other end but the shot is over. Free kick Ilkeston in good position 25 yards out. Fenton shot hits the wall. Good run by Reco feeds Lambert but his cross is cleared.     Gate   473

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

Good save by Durrant from Dunne. Alex heads across six yard line but Sheffield clear. It's a better game now it's end to end.  Walker tries a grubber but keeper gets down to it. Newsham bullet header flies over.        1-1   75 minutes

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

Sheffield should have had the game won by half time after dominating and missing several chances. Much better by Ilkeston in the second half

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

We seemed terrified of making mistakes in the first half hence we took very few risks. The defence and midfield were put under by the lack of movement from those around them which saw players getting caught in possession or giving the ball away with a misdirected pass. We only had attempt on goal in the first half and that was a long range speculative effort from Keiran Wells. In the second half we were much braver and we got a disallowed goal and then the equaliser as a reult. At that point I thought we were going to go on and win the game but Sheffield regrouped got stronger as the half went on.
The draw should bolster the confidence as at 45 minutes it looked like an inevitable defeat was on the cards but the lads managed to turn it round!

Ilkeston did well to take a point after a scrappy first half which saw Sheffield create more opportunities but without turning their ascendancy into goals. Mitchell Dunne in particular stood out as the visitors most creative player as Ilkeston struggled to get a foothold. Sheffield eventually paid the price for missed chances when Kieran Wells equalised early in the second half.
On a rain soaked pitch it was Sheffield who made the better start. A fine run by Dunne was ended by Tom Marshall at the expense of a corner then Marc Newsham fired over when well placed. The opening goal came after 20 minutes following a good move down the left. Edward Cribley’s pull back was hammered home by Sheldon Jordan from the edge of the area. The goal lifted the visitors and in the next couple of minutes they twice went close to increasing their lead after a goalmouth scramble, then a powerful shot by Cribley rattling Ilkeston’s crossbar. Robins captain Chris Robertson prevented another Sheffield goal with a saving header before Dunne fired wide. Wells had a chance for Ilkeston but his shot was too high then on 42 minutes the impressive Dunne created a real chance for himself to extend Sheffield’s lead but his finish was wide of the target. Half time arrived with Ilkeston fortunate to be only one goal in arrears.
After such a poor first half, Ilkeston had to be better and they were. It only took a minute for Wells to find the net but it was disallowed for a foul on keeper Jonathon Hedge. On 52 minutes Kieran Fenton put Kole Lambert through on goal but Hedge saved. Sheffield went down the other end and Ross Durrant did well to save from Dunne but the equaliser came on 56 minutes. Alex Marshall flicked the ball on with his head and Kieran Wells headed it over the keeper and into the net. On 63 minutes Ashley Grayson fired wide of Durrant’s left post. Five minutes later Kieran Wells had a chance but elected to pass and the opportunity was lost. Both sides were getting chances with Jamie Walker testing Hedge and Newsham replying with a header that was only just too high. Walker had another shot deflected wide and Dunne was off target as both teams looked for a late winner but ultimately settled for a draw.

Re: Ilkeston v Sheffield - Sat 18th Jan

Sheffield's match report :

Sheffield FC let another win slip away on Saturday, as they were pegged back after a dominant first half, drawing 1-1 at Ilkeston Town.
Club welcomed back Mitchell Dunne after re-signing for Sheffield from Gainsborough Trinity, and set up in a very attack minded 4-3-3 formation, and it had the home team on the back foot from the first whistle. This positivity was rewarded in the 19th minute as Sheldon Jordan showed neat footwork on the left, setting Ted Cribley free with a run on the byline and having time and patience to pick out Jordan who had continued his run to the penalty spot, with the big striker slotting home for his first goal for the World’s First. Sheffield could easily have added to their tally as they continued the pressure on a shell shocked Ilson defence, with the new pairing of Jordan and Dunne ripping through the back four to tee up Marc Newsham, who in turn forced a fine save from ex-Clubbie Ross Durrant.  From the resulting corner Cribley played a low ball to the near post, where Newsham was able to return the ball to the winger, only for Cribley to rattle the crossbar with a thumping drive. Robins’ keeper Durrant was a very lucky participant moments after this, a cross from Newsham bobbled in front of the keeper, and although the Ilkeston stopper could only palm the ball across the goal, there was no one to add the vital touch.
Just before the break Club had yet another opportunity, as Ben Turner was put through following another outrageous flick from Jordan, with Dunne unable to steer the end product on target and missing by a matter of inches.
The second period was a much more even affair, with Ilkeston making the better start of the two teams, and finally starting to test the Sheffield defence.  Town’s skipper Chris Robertson played an incisive pass through the middle, with Reece Fyfe picking up the ball, before forcing a solid stop from Jonathan Hedge. Ten minutes after the restart it was 1-1, a ball into the middle saw Alex Marshall flick the ball on, with Kieron Wells getting in to nod the ball over Hedge into the empty net. Sheffield almost regained the lead immediately, as Newsham put Dunne in free on goal, with Durrant pulling off a fingertip save to deny a dream return. Ilkeston managed to control the game for much of the second half, but were unable to really trouble the visitors, with Hedge not tested to much degree with the game eventually fizzling out to a stalemate.
Ilkeston Town: Ross Durrant, Fabian Smith, Kieran Fenton, Reece Fyre, Christopher Robinson, Thomas Marshall, Jermaine Hollis, Fernando Bell Toxtle, Kieran Wells, Alex Marshall, Kole Lambert
Subs: Jaime Walker, Richard Stainsby, Daniel Mullarkey, Billy Bennent, Dean Freeman
Sheffield FC: Jonathan Hedge, Ben Turner, Damian Magee, Robert Darkin, Stuart Ludlam, Adam Chapman, Edward Cribley, Louis Thwaites, Marc Newsham, Mitchell Dunne, Sheldon Jordan
Subs: Danny Deakin, Regan Hutchinson, Lee Cooksey, Ashley Grayson, Jordan Chapell
Attendance: 473
