Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town - Sat 29th Feb

Newcastle Town may be 16th in the league table but their recent results are good and they have won their last five matches so this will be tough game .

Here are the results of their last five matches :
Tue    4 Feb   Newcastle Town  3  Walsall Wood       0  (Staffs C Cup)
Tue  11 Feb   Newcastle Town  3   Buxton                 1  (League Cup)
Wed 19 Feb   Worksop Town    0   Newcastle Town  2
Sat   22 Feb   Frickley Athletic  0   Newcastle Town  1
Tue  25 Feb   Chasetown         1    Newcastle Town  2

Newcastle have a better away record than home record. Six of their eight wins have been on the road,
Their home record is  Played 13, Won 2, Drawn 2  and Lost 9.
Their average home attendance is 122

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town - Sat 29th Feb

Any news on how the pitch is holding up with all of this rain forecast?

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town - Sat 29th Feb

According to weather forecasts it's high risk of rain there until about 9 am tomorrow. I'm guessing a pitch inspection around 10am  if they are to stop us setting off.

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town - Sat 29th Feb

Newcastle v Ilkeston is one of only four matches still on in the NPL South East Division. According to the referee the pitch is very soft and is just about playable.  We travelled through falling snow at Stoke, but the sun is now out at the Newcastle Town ground.  It's 15 minutes to kick off.

The teams are out. Ilkeston in red shirt, red shorts and blue socks, Newcastle in blue shirts, white shorts, blue socks. Ilkeston's blue socks makes them look completely different.

Ilkeston are edging it so far. First corner to Newcastle. Bennett heads clear. Free kick Newcastle now 30 yards out and central. It goes out for a goal kick. Reco fouled as he's breaking forward. Wells get a header in but it's easily saved.       0-0     19 minutes

Good play by McLean but Ilkeston clear. Foul by Scott on Smith earns him a yellow.  Tom Marshall header  comes back off the post. Nearest yet. The ball whacks the ref so it's a dropped ball. Corner Ilkeston. Inswinger by Bennett but keeper collects.       0-0    27 minutes

Ilkeston on top and need a goal. Another good run by McLean but he can't get a shot in.  Good spell by Newcastle and they nearly score as Ilkeston defender heads off the line. Not sure who it was. Corner Ilkeston . It's headed away.

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town - Sat 29th Feb

A bit of praise for each player today :

Alex was right about playing Reco wide. Newcastle couldn't cope with him. The whole team look much more solid since Joe Maguire arrived. Maguire and Fenton are forming a good partnership in central defence giving Tom Marshall more freedom to push forward. We have two excellent backs in Fabs and Bennett and Cullingworth has given us a bit more muscle in midfield. Fernando is now showing what he is capable of and Kole has found his shooting boots. Kieran Wells deserved his goal for his 100% commitment throughout as in every game. That leaves Ross Durrant who for me is the standout candidate for Player of the Year. Mention also for Ayleal Dill who came on near the end and impressed with some firm commitment to the cause.
A couple of weeks ago I thought we were heading for a bottom six finish but after the last two perfomances we're more likely to finish in the top half. It would be great to go on an unbeaten run till the end of the season.

My Match Report :

Sat 29th February 2020
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Newcastle Town  1  Ilkeston Town  2
Ilkeston came from behind to win with a late Kieran Wells header on a sodden pitch at Newcastle Under Lyme. Prior to the game Newcastle had won their last five and came into the match with no shortage of confidence. But it was Ilkeston who had the better of the first half and probably should have gone in ahead.
Newcastle had the first opportunity when Ethan Vale’s header was saved by Ross Durrant. The nearest Ilkeston came to scoring was a Tom Marshall header that hit the woodwork on 27 minutes. This was followed by Newcastle’s Kieran Brown seeing Durrant out of position and lobbing the ball goalwards but too high. On 35 minutes Reco Fyfe had a good chance but keeper Joe Slinn did really well to get in the way of his shot. Just before half time Ilkeston had a lucky double escape when two efforts in quick succession were cleared off the line. So the first half ended goalless with Ilkeston having had more possession but the better chances falling to Newcastle.
Newcastle started the second half strongly with star man Ryan McLean looking dangerous and it was he who set up the chance from which Joshua Glover put the hosts ahead on 54 minutes. Ilkeston needed to react quickly and they did. Kole Lambert showed good close skill in the area before firing in the equaliser just after the hour mark. Both teams then looked for a winner. Charlie Scott had a good chance for Newcastle on 73 minutes but Durrant produced another fine save. Ten minutes later excellent play by Fyfe down the left brought about the Ilkeston winner. His teasing run and cross was met by Kieran Wells whose superb diving header flew past Slinn and into the net. Newcastle made a big effort to salvage a point in the remaining time but Ilkeston were able to hold out for a second successive win.

Comment from Dave Dale Newcastle coach :

Not quite enough today against top 8 side Ilkeston Town. A fairly even game with both sides having good chances to score. Perhaps the visitors just edged it but we have matured well this season..we look forward to our semi final at home to Stafford on Tuesday night.
