S/East Round-Up: Stamford Close Gap On Leaders

This is James Gordon's round up of the matches played on Saturday 29th Feb. in the NPL South East Division on the Football Web Pages website. There's a bit more coverage of Ilkeston's match than normal probably due to only four matches being played :

Stamford have closed the gap on leaders Leek Town following their 2-1 win over Worksop. A goal from Tendai Chitiza and a late winner from Harry Vince in front of a crowd of more than 400 means that the side are now just five points behind top spot. Just three more games survived the weather over the weekend. Sutton Coldfield Town claimed their fifth successive win that has seen the club promoted to 7th place and just four points away from the play-offs. Isai Marselia scored the deciding goal on the 68th minute, while Regan Ganley was voted as the club’s social media man of the match. Chasetown extended the gap on the relegation spot with a 1-0 victory over Belper Town, who remain in the play-offs. Joshua Cooke with the only goal on the day in the 73rd minute. Elsewhere, Ilkeston Town claimed a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Town.  “Outstanding. The last two games, the performances, the attitude, the mentality against a very good Newcastle Town a side,” said Ilkeston manager Martin Carruthers. “They’re a bang in-form team. To go a goal down and to play some of the football that we played and to show that character and to come back and score two very good goals was outstanding. “I can’t praise the lads high enough. It’s amazing what a win can do for confidence. That’s two in two now and we’ve got to keep this form and really give it a go now until the end of the season.”

For comparison purposes, my "round up" of league matches played for that same Saturday which will  appear in the next home matchday programme is as follows:

Matches Played Sat 29th Feb ’20
Belper Town  0  Chasetown  1
Newcastle Town  1  Ilkeston Town  2
Stamford  2  Worksop Town  1
Sutton Coldfield  1  Kidsgrove Athletic 0
Waterlogged pitches again played havoc with the fixture list and only four of the ten scheduled fixtures took place.  Playoff chasers Belper Town slipped up, losing by 1-0 to third from bottom Chasetown.  Joshua Cooke scored the Chasetown winner 15 minutes from time.  Ilkeston came from behind to take all three points at Newcastle Town. Joshua Glover put Newcastle ahead, Kole Lambert equalised and Kieran Wells got the winner. Worksop were hugely disappointed to lose to a late Harry Vince penalty at second placed Stamford. Tendai Chitiza gave Stamford the lead and Steve McDonnell scored an equaliser which Worksop thought should have given them a point. Sutton Coldfield made it five straight wins when they defeated Kidsgrove by a single Isai Marselia strike. Coldfield and Kidsgrove are both well placed for a late playoff challenge.
