Arrived early and its still raining here but it's only light rain. It looked like the game was in doubt but things are looking more promising now.

The players are now having a kick about so it's game on. Just tried to get a cup of tea but they've got no milk. They seem a bit short staffed in the clubhouse but they're on the ball with their covid arrangements. The Ilkeston players are warming up on a side pitch.
Ilkeston starting line-up
1 Richard Stainsby, 2 Joe Wilson, 3 Trialist, 4 James Cullingworth, 5 Alex Render, 6 Tom Marshall, 7 Joe Brothwell, 8 Trialist, 9 Trialist, 10 Kole Lambert, 11 Mason Lee

This was to be a harsh lesson for Ilkeston tonight against an inferior but highly motivated and physical Clifton. The first half had been evenly contested so as Ilkeston introduced their senior players, a comfortable win was anticipated. But the home side shocked Ilkeston with three well taken goals on the counter and it then became an uphill battle to get back into the game. Pushing forward meant taking risks at the back and Clifton exploited the opportunities that came their way. There was plenty of good possession and some nice approach work by Ilkeston but the Clifton keeper was in fine form. Clifton's finishing was clinical and there were some excellent goals. No doubt if the game had gone on longer Ilkeston would probably have won but it was Clifton's night and they relished their victory. Conceding five goals was certainly not on Ilkeston's agenda and the absent Joe Maguire's defensive qualities were definitely missed.
There were some harsh words after the game from Martin Carruthers, Wayne Hallcro and Kelvin Wilson suggesting "We treated the match like a pre-season game and they treated it like a cup final."

Clifton 5 Ilkeston Town 4
Ilkeston unexpectedly finished on the wrong end of an entertaining nine goal pre season friendly at Clifton. The home side started well but it was Ilkeston who went ahead through Kole Lambert on 6 minutes. Clifton equalised on 34 minutes and an even first half finished level. The second half saw Ilkeston introduce their senior players and a comfortable win was anticipated. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way as Clifton started to look dangerous on the counter attack. On 58 minutes they took the lead after a shot came back off the post and fell perfectly to a waiting accomplice to hammer home. Clifton’s keeper made a fine save from Ollie Brown-Hill before the hosts swept forward and added to their score with a superb counter attack after 67 minutes. Two minutes later and before Ilkeston could recover, Clifton struck again to make it 4-1. Ilkeston quickly pulled one back when Alex Troke scored from the spot. The Robins piled forward and Clifton’s keeper did well to save Troke’s thunderous effort before Nat Watson made it 4-3 with a cracker into the bottom corner of the net. Clifton looked in danger of being over run as Ilkeston seized control. Troke fired just wide and Brown-Hill’s power drive just cleared the bar. Then it happened again. Ilkeston were caught out by another swift Clifton break and clinical finish. Zak Goodson pulled one back in the closing minutes but it was too late to avert an unforeseen defeat.
