MATCH REPORT
Ilkeston Town entertained a strong Notts County at a sunny New Manor Ground but despite showing neat approach play and plenty of fight lost to two goals from Kyle Wootton.
Notts had the first effort on goal when O’Brien came close after cutting inside. Ilkeston first opportunity came when Zak Goodson pace got him free but he tried to bring it back on to his right and the chance was gone.
Notts were looking comfortable on the ball but the Ilkeston defence were looking with both Maguire and Fenton making crucial tackles. At the other end both Wilson and Tait provided teasing crosses that no one could get on the end of. New signing had a good effort with a twenty yard volley that Slocombe saved well.
The visitors started to show their class before the break and it was no surprise when Kyle Wooton scored from close range after Durrant had saved his initial shot.
After the break Notts again started strongly and again Wootton came close for the Magpies. He made no mistake on 54 minutes when he beat the off side trap to find himself free and he slotted the ball past a stranded Durrant. Troke and Watson then troubled the Notts defence with some clever interplay but the Robins could not get the break they needed to get back into the game. As both teams made the inevitable substitutions the game never looked changing course although Ilkeston never gave up trying to get something from the game.
There were many positive from the game despite the 2-0 reverse. The return of Maguire, the pace of Goodson and the clever approach play from Troke and Watson. Thomas also exceled on his debut and looked to be a great addition to the squad.
