Tuesday 22nd September 2020 : FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Coventry Sphinx 0 Ilkeston Town 2
Two goals in the final 10 minutes saved Ilkeston’s blushes against lower league Coventry Sphinx. Mason Lee had only just come on when he turned the ball past the Sphinx keeper to break the hosts’ resistance. Then with two minutes left Jack Thomas saw the keeper off his line and lobbed home from 40 yards to seal the win.
The first half was a battle with very few chances but the second half was far more entertaining. As time went on Sphinx were fancying their chances in a penalty shootout and Ilkeston were getting more and more frustrated that they couldn’t convert their superiority into goals.
After the half time team talk, Ilkeston came out for the second half with much more determination and within five minutes they had gone close twice. First, Alex Troke’s header was saved then James Reid’s blast looked a certain goal before it was brilliantly turned round the post. On 78 minutes Zak Goodson on the break fired inches wide before Lee finally broke the deadlock. Sphinx tried to hit back and Durrant was forced into a super save from a free kick which looked to be heading for the top corner. After that Sphinx had nothing left and Thomas made sure of Ilkeston’s FA Cup progress with his stunning lob.
