Here we go for our first match in the FA Trophy against Kempston Rovers who we know little about.
After the euphoria of reaching the four qualifying round of the FA Cup and the excitement of drawing ex Football League team, Hartlepool United in the next round, this match feels like a bit of a non-event. But it could be the start of another “Cup” run in a more winnable competition with decent prize money along the way. So let’s take it seriously and extend our unbeaten start to nine matches.
We enter the competition at the 2nd round qualifying where the prize money for the winners is £3000.

An even worse first half than v Alvechurch. Rovers were a poor side there for the taking
First half we played at their pace, were too direct and the offensive players didn’t work hard enough to find pockets of space. A lazy sloppy first half. Kempstone were very surprised to score as they’re not used to winning. From then they wound the clock down and delayed the restart as much as they could
It didn’t help having Billy & Fenners injured either. Neither looks good but fingers crossed for quick recoveries
After the break we upped the tempo and dictated the pace. Going 3 4 3 and throwing Zak on proved the turning point, the crowd found their voice and we squeezed home
Not a classic. But a win. Some game time for the fringe players too. MOM for me a toss up between Trokey and Reece

Saturday 17th October 2020 : FA Trophy 2nd Round
Ilkeston Town 2 Kempston Rovers 1
Two second half goals by Alex Troke enabled Ilkeston to progress further in the FA Trophy. Not much went right in the first half as first, Kieran Fenton and then Billy Bennett limped off inside the opening half hour. Between those two injuries Rovers nearly took the lead. Ross Durrant found himself stranded as a looping header looked to be going in but Riece Bertram got back to scoop the ball off the line, wrapping himself round the post in the process. The first half was very scrappy with numerous stoppages for infringements but Rovers took the lead on 36 minutes through Alvin Magagada who took advantage of a defensive lapse.Ilkeston started the second half with a bit more urgency with James Reid testing Rovers keeper Peter Denton two minutes in, following a great ball by Jack Thomas. On the hour mark a terrific effort by Thomas was just wide. Three minutes later Ilkeston were level. A fine cross by Zak Goodson was met by Troke whose bullet header gave Denton no chance. Soon after, Troke nearly scored again but this time his header was well saved. On 70 minutes Troke finally gave Ilkeston the lead when he latched onto an intended clearance, firing low into the corner of the net. Goodson then had a further opportunity but his close range effort was deflected wide. On 85 minutes Denton spilled a cross by Troke but got away with it when Joe Maguire couldn’t convert Bertram’s pass. In the closing stages Durrant did well to push away Ben Baker’s fierce free kick as Kempston made a last ditch effort to take the game to penalties.
