Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town : Tue 20th Oct 2020

Troke header is wide.   90 minutes are up. Dill tripped on edge of area.  Reid' s free kick is too high.

There's the whistle and it's a heavy defeat.  Unfortunately only Reid performed tonight.

Some of our players just didn't turn up.  Second half we actually had more possession but Newcastle's forwards were clinical.

Newcastle  4  Ilkeston  1

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town : Tue 20th Oct 2020

A game too far sadly. Missing Fenners Billy & Nat against an excellent side. Never got to grips with their 7 McLean who ran us a merry dance

Simply beaten by a better side. 4 1 about right. But we’d have taken 8 wins and a draw from 10 on day one plus progress in two cups wouldn’t we

Cup runs are great. Full of romance and £££££ but injuries  and suspensions are now hitting us hard. A free hit Saturday. Nothing expected of us. So enjoy the day then back to the bread and butter

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town : Tue 20th Oct 2020

Match report :

Tuesday 20th October 2020  :  Northern Premier League - South East Division
Newcastle Town  4  Ilkeston Town  1
Ilkeston’s unbeaten record came to an emphatic end after a below par performance against also unbeaten Newcastle Town. Three of Newcastle’s goals came from speedy counter attacks which Ilkeston had difficulty dealing with throughout the match. Ilkeston started well forcing the hosts to defend but were caught out by Newcastle’s first attack. Speed merchant Ryan McLean broke free and fired past Ross Durrant after just 6 minutes. Ilkeston responded but without creating a meaningful opening while Newcastle had another good opportunity when a Joe Berks shot was saved low down by Durrant. On 24 minutes Ollie Brown-Hill forced Dominic Kurasik into good save and Brown-Hill was close again when his shot on the turn hit the side netting. On 33 minutes Alex Troke equalised from the spot after he was taken out in the box. Five minutes later Newcastle had a penalty themselves and regained the lead through McLean which they held till half time.
As in the first half Ilkeston were first to press and had two early shots blocked before once again they were stunned by a lightning break out with James Melhado lashing the ball home on 50 minutes. Mitchell Tait’s effort was just too high as Ilkeston retaliated. Jack Thomas tested Kurasik during a good spell of Robins possession but Newcastle scored again after Ilkeston thought they should have had a free kick. Joe Berks took advantage as he raced away and slammed in number 4 on 70 minutes. On 80 minutes Ilkeston had a strong penalty shout when Joe Wilson appeared to be scythed down. Troke was close with a header near the end but Newcastle were worthy winners because of their superior finishing. James Reid was Ilkeston’s shining light on disappointing night.

Re: Newcastle Town v Ilkeston Town : Tue 20th Oct 2020

I think that performance has been coming for the last couple of weeks. We’re now running on empty. We were predictable and pedestrian – by the time we got the ball forward they’d got their defensive unit in place. Whereas they broke at pace, with players (and Ryan McLean in particular (he was also their best player when we played there last year)) running at our defenders and scaring the life out of them.

You have to say that their 3rd goal was a thing of beauty, going from one end of the pitch to the other without us getting a touch. Lovely through ball for their first and a terrific strike for their 4th. They looked a good side, but not exceptional, I don’t think they’ll finish in the top 3 or 4.

I don’t know if Goodson is still carrying an injury but he looked well off his game. And if we lose his pace and trickery and the width he brings we’re going to struggle, and we did. If we are to challenge for promotion, we need an infusion of 2 or 3 top quality players to strengthen our squad. We need width and we need pace and we need creativity.

One thing I have liked this season is the honesty of our manager, Martin Caruthers. He doesn’t sugarcoat things or offer excuses, he tells you exactly how it is. He said after the Market Drayton game that we don’t have a title winning mentality and he’s clearly right. We’re a long way from being a mature, settled side, but that will come in time. Might not even be this season but I think everyone can see we’re on an upward curve.  I look forward to hearing Martin’s  after-match comments.

Great points Nicky

Lads are tired. It’s been a great start to the season but lots of little niggles add up

Free hit Saturday. Let’s all enjoy it and reset the season on Sunday
