Belper Ready for Anticipated Restart on 19th December

.

Belper Town played a friendly against Coalville Town yesterday in preparation for anticipated restart on 19th December

WOODCOCK STUNNER ENOUGH TO BEAT COALVILLE TOWN

Belper Town’s hastily arranged friendly game against Coalville Town of the Southern League Premier Division Central, provided good entertainment for a strictly home fans only audience.

In anticipation of league football returning this coming Saturday, the Nailers had already started their preparations with a 7-2 victory away to Armthorpe Welfare in midweek, but this game provided a stiffer test, and they stood up very well to the challenge.

The Nailers had a new face in between the posts with Rhys Davies standing in for the injured Leigh Overton, although his appearances will be short lived as he will be joining Fleetwood Town from 1st January.

The game was very even with both sides having good spells although it would be fair to say that Coalville’s profligacy in front of goal combined with a solid defensive display by the Nailers meant that the visitors didn’t have anything to show for their endeavours.

The Ravens had already gone close on a couple of occasions when the Nailers took the lead in grand style. Following a breakaway on the left in the 18th minute Josh Woodcock made him self available to receive the ball on the right corner of the penalty area, and without hesitation struck a rising shot into the far top corner of the net. It was an excellent finish by any standards.

The visitors had three presentable chances in the remainder of the half with the best of them coming in the 24th minute and two more speculative efforts in the 30th and 33rd minutes.

Chib Chilaka had Belper’s best first half effort on the stroke of half time when he headed a free kick by Josh Woodcock just over the cross bar.

The second period provided fewer opportunities for both teams although the Ravens probably had their best spell of the game in the early stages of the half. Riece Bertram, who has recently rejoined the Nailers from Ilkeston Town wasn’t far away with a header from a 65th minute corner kick, but Danny South needed to be alert to prevent a certain equaliser from the visitors with a timely clearance off the goal line on 73 minutes.

There was plenty of good football on show from both sides as the game drew to its close however it needed a smart tip over the bar by Belper’s ‘new’ ‘keeper to prevent a late equaliser for the Ravens.

We now look forward to the season restarting on Saturday (19th) with a tough away trip to Leek Town, although this has yet to be confirmed.

Belper Town: Davies, Woodcock, Fishley, Wilson, South, Rhodes, Robson, Gregory, Chilaka, McConnell, Wright. Subs (all used): Peterson, Bertram, Nelthorpe, Lichfield, Hinsley, Robinson, Curtis.
Coalville Town: Deeney, Thomas, Eggleton, Robertson, Towers, Doyle, Shaw, McGlinchy, Kee, Berridge.

Cleethorpes also ready for Dec 19th anticipated restart

WINTERTON RANGERS 0 CLEETHORPES TOWN 1  BY DAVID SIMPSON

LATE GOAL EASES OWLS TO WIN!

An 87th minute strike from Brody Robertson saw Clee edge a competitive friendly 1-0 against Winterton Rangers on Saturday afternoon. With the possible resumption of the Northern Premier League next weekend, the management group would have been pleased to get another match into the players, who should be in excellent shape for the restart.
The side lined-up as follow:
Goal: Theo Richardson
Defence: Tim Lowe, Liam Dickens, Paul Walker, Sam Topliss
Midfield: Harry Middleton, Conor Marshall, Brandon Buckley
Forward: Brody Robertson, Scott Vernon (c), Curtis Bateson
Subs: Matt Bloomer, Josh Venney, Harvey Lidgard, Alfie Boswell, Sonny Allenby

After morning rain, the fixture got underway in dry & still conditions. Even though it was home fans only under current restrictions, it was still massively preferable to playing behind closed doors. The Owls had the lion’s share of the ball in the opening half-hour. Bateson & Lowe both tested the keeper and Buckley had a shot deflected behind, following a long period of possession. However, Rangers had a great chance to take the lead in the 36th minute. The striker directing a header wide from around 8-yards out, when afforded plenty of space. As the clock ticked down towards the break, a charging Lowe run into the box was ended by an untidy defensive challenge. The referee took a moment to consider the situation and pointed to the spot. The reliable Vernon stepped forward but was thwarted on this occasion by a smart low save from Popple.
HT Winterton Rangers 0 Cleethorpes Town 0
As is often the case in these encounters, rolling substitutions were in operation. The young trio of Lidgard, Boswell & Allenby (along with the more experienced Venney) were all given the chance to impress as the match wore on.
Chances were at a premium after the interval, with thoughts turning towards a rare 0-0. Nevertheless, Clee persevered and broke the stalemate with a little over 3 minutes left.
It was one of the under 18 subs who provided the assist as well. Allenby threaded a ball through to Brody Robertson, who finished in typical fashion, low under the keeper.
FT Winterton Rangers 0 Cleethorpes Town 1 (Robertson 87) Attendance: 75 (approx)

Another good workout against a decent NCEL outfit! Good to see the under 18s involved and a word to for Liam Dickens. To my eye, he has been a revelation in central defence – his calm, unhurried style is great to watch.
With the change in regulations in the last few days, everyone will be hoping for some Christmas football for us all to enjoy. The Club is still awaiting news from the authorities however… fingers crossed.

League Statement  :  Dec 14, 2020

The Trident Leagues (the Isthmian, Northern Premier and Southern Football Leagues) welcome the decision to allow some fans into grounds situated in Tier 3 areas. However, in light of the decision of all 224 Clubs only last week to vote overwhelmingly in favour of suspending the current season the Leagues have decided to wait to see the implications of the Government’s review of the Tier system in England – due next Wednesday – before making any further announcements.

Hope they mean this Wednesday (16th December)
I get the feeling several clubs were hoping to restart fixtures this Saturday (19th Dec) but it seems the League has decided to delay the restart.
That seems odd considering that the completion of a full season is already in doubt due to postponements so far.

The Northern Premier League website now shows all league fixtures for 19th December as postponed.

The first date of unpostponed league matches is now Boxing Day.

Another change of plan

NPL Statement On Return
 about an hour ago     By James Gordon

Clubs permitted to resume this Saturday.
Following the announcement made on 10th December that confirmed the return of spectators to grounds in Tier 3 areas, we subsequently received a high number of requests from NPL teams asking to play league fixtures from Saturday 19th December.

In line with the statement issued yesterday morning it was the intention of the Trident Leagues to await notice of the implications of the latest Government review expected on Wednesday.  However, in view of the number of requests the Northern Premier League Board has taken the decision to permit clubs who are in agreement to play their league fixtures on Saturday 19th December with a 3pm KO.

Should there be any adverse changes affecting our Steps 3 - 4 as a result of any announcements made on Wednesday, we will advise you accordingly.  Otherwise we will look to resume the published league fixture schedule from Saturday 26th December for all clubs. This decision is that of the Board of the Northern Premier League.

                                                                ***************************************

Let's get playing.
