Really good performance by Marine FC today agains a decent strength Tottenham side. Spurs have some good young players and Marine did well to keep the score respectable and didn't let themselves down.
I've been to Marine several times with Ilkeston and it's not a ground that we've always done well at. Our visit in the 2014-15 season was rather eventful. These are a few extracts from the 2014-15 Year Book, the season when we reached the playoffs before losing to Curzon Ashton in the final.
".......... The following week Ilkeston travelled to play Marine FC. I always enjoy going there because their officials are very friendly. They proudly told us that Marine had never in their history been relegated, a remarkable statistic as they were founded in 1894.
The main family stand is situated behind one goal which is a bit unusual. it's very rare that there is any trouble at our games but on this occasion there was. A small minority of our supporters (not regulars) let the club down with some unsavoury chanting.
In a separate incident, a bunch of local kids stole the Ilkeston mascot (a traffic cone bedecked in Ilkeston kit) and ran out of the ground with it. A picture of the thieves later appeared on social media parading the stolen item. Also at this match, Ilkeston's management team (Wilson and Chettle) were incensed by some of the Ilkeston fans shouting abuse at two of their own players.
This led to the Chairman of the Supporters Group issuing condemnation of the poor behaviour in a written statement to fans which was given out at the next home game. The Chairman's action was in turn not appreciated by some supporters. You can never please everyone.
Going back to the match, Marine were desperately trying to avoid relegation so it wasn't gong to be an easy game. In a scrappy first half Marine went ahead and held the lead until half time. James Reid equalised before Rob Duffy came on as a substitute and nicked the winner with an opportunist goal in added time. Duffy was not happy that he'd been left out of the starting eleven and shrugged off the congratulations of his team mates to show his displeasure. The win kept Ilkeston's promotion hopes alive"

I went to Marine years ago when Paul Fletcher was one of the temporary managers. We had just lost a manager It may have been Keith Alexander. I liked their ground and the officials were very friendly. The ground had the same atmosphere as the Moat Ground at Gresley. What people call a proper non league ground. I watched the game against Spurs and wondered how many of there so called fans wearing special scarves actually watched Marine every week. Or was it like when Ilkeston reached the Second Round and we had die hard supporters decked out on their regalia being interviewed on TV and nobody had ever seen them near the ground before or since. It is probably the only downside of being successful is when the glory hunters come out of the woodwork and claim to be life long fans because they once shopped at Dunhlem on the site of the Old Manor Ground!! The real fans are people like Mic Capil who has hardly missed a game since the Fifties! I watched my first game in 1967 but i am only a part timer compared with others. (I was very very young at the time!!!)
