Statement Following Latest Lockdown

 about 2 hours ago By James Gordon

An update on the 2020/21 season. The board of the Northern Premier League has, together with our fellow Trident Leagues, reviewed the implications of the latest Government lockdown. The matter was also discussed at length by the FA’s Alliance Committee earlier this week.In order to reach a decision that will apply across Steps 3 & 4 in the National League System, and which is informed by the views of all clubs at Steps 3 & 4, clubs will shortly be asked by the Football Association to provide their views on whether the 2020/21 season should be terminated and, if not, what the alternative should be.Independent of that survey, all three of the Trident League’s boards hold the view that the season should cease immediately and be declared null and void. The ultimate decision lies with The FA Council, following a proposal made by the Alliance Committee but no proposal will be drafted until clubs’ views have been collated and assessed.

In the meantime, the Northern Premier League is postponing all fixtures up to and including Saturday 6th March since there is no suggestion that the national lockdown will be lifted prior to this date. The League will continue to provide its Member Clubs with updates as and when it is able to do so.

CLUB STATEMENT FOLLOWING NULL & VOID RECOMMENDATION  BY JONATHAN EELES

NON ELITE CLUBS ASKED TO VOTE ON 2020/21 SEASON OPTIONS

On Friday 8 January 2021 the Club received a letter from League Management Committee of the Pitching In Northern Premier League, the content has been widely discussed and publicised but in a nutshell it stated :

  • Postponement of all fixtures up to and including Saturday 6th March across the Trident Leagues
  • Clubs will be asked by the FA to provide views on whether the 2020/21 season should be terminated & if not, what the alternative should be
  • The Trident League’s boards hold the view that the season should cease immediately and be declared null and void

The letter and its contents have been met with different opinions and views across Football. Jon Eeles, Chairman has stated "A second season declared null & void would be a big blow for non elite football - no recognition for the hard work of the players, management, officials and volunteers and nothing to reward the supporters and sponsors who have been fantastic during a very difficult period." "I would urge all Clubs to look beyond their own agendas and press forward for a solution to the current problem - there are several alternatives we should consider including a resuming the season when it is safe to do so, a smaller regionalised competition, and combining last season and the current season on a PPG basis. All have been suggested and all have merit. I sincerely hope these options are considered by the FA and that Clubs views are considered before any decision is made."

"I agree that currently, and for the foreseeable short term future, football at our level cannot or should not take place - and playing without fans is wrong for so many reasons. The differing level of Tiers across the UK before the national lockdown did not provide a level playing field and was effecting the integrity of the competition."  "A resumption should only be reconsidered when the virus is under control and a substantial amount of the population have been vaccinated."  "The trading and operating conditions since March 2020 faced by the business community and the football Club have made it an incredibly tough period for all.

I'd like to take the opportunity to re-assure sponsors and supporters that despite this the Club is in good shape - the fundraising opportunities and operating turnover has been severely impacted by the pandemic but careful financial management means we will be ready to resume when we can."  "I don't think things will ever be the same again following this period, but the Board, the management team and players will be working just has hard - and your support will be more important than ever, stay safe and see you soon."

Re: Looks like it's all over

It does look all over but we are back to what do you do if it is not completely null and void. I am still in the camp that says people will be crying out for some football when the conditions improve and it is safe to do so. I would even consider summer football.
However I do see clubs having issues with treatment of their pitches over summer and even Ilkeston Town have plans to instal a 4G surface but cannot proceed in case the season is extended or resumed.
I fully understand Leek fans management and players desire to get promoted as they and Stamford have been far the best teams over the last two years and surely have served promotion. i certainly would not be grudge them moving up to the NPL Premier as it would make it easier for the Robins to get promoted next season.

Clubs at non-league steps 3-6 have been sent an FA survey about how to decide the season. National North & South clubs are also being consulted. Clubs have until Friday 22nd January to respond. A decision will then be made by the FA Alliance Committee & FA Council.
