Wisbech Town will do better than last season

.
Wisbech boss confident of upturn in fortunes thanks to new-look squad

Wisbech Town boss Brett Whaley is confident his side's fortunes can be lifted next season if he is able to keep his new-look squad together.

Wisbech Town made it three wins in as many games, and if the same players stay at the club come August, their boss believes fortunes will turn in their favour. The Fenmen maintained their perfect end-of-season friendly record with a 4-0 victory over King’s Lynn Town Reserves on Friday, following wins at Pinchbeck United and Thetford Town.   Wisbech have welcomed some new additions, including March Town quintet Charlie Congreve, Danny Emmington, Tom Mcleish, Eoin McQuaid and Toby Allen, who have reunited with ex-Hares boss Brett Whaley since the 2020-21 season was curtailed.

“We wanted to play Lynn as we knew, as a young side, they have a lot of pace up top and with quality in midfield, they would test us differently to what we’ve had so far,” Whaley told Fenmen Radio. “We didn’t start particularly well in either half; we had good spells midway through, but it’s long periods of times where the boys are playing together.   Liam Adams, Ben Richards, Aaron Hart and Dylan Edge were on target at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium for Wisbech, who next travel to Biggleswade Town on Saturday behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Whaley said he hopes those playing now will remain at the club come July when the Fenmen’s pre-season campaign ahead of the 2021-22 season, due to start on August 14. “There’s a change of leagues hopefully, but I’d say arguably the leagues are now stronger,” he said.  “I’m hoping everybody involved now will be involved come July and through the season, so every minute we have together through training and games is helping us improve.    “We look better playing the way we are and the boys that have come in have added to us. “The boys will have June to get themselves fit, but we will be fitter and more together than we were last year and, right now, we will be better than we were last year.”

In the last two curtailed seasons Wisbech won only 5 of 36 matches. One of them was a 2-1 win at the NMG on Tuesday 1st Oct 2019

Ilkeston Town  1  Wisbech Town  2
Lowly Wisbech shocked Ilkeston after the Robins had gone ahead just before half time. Within a minute they were level after a superb strike from Jurelle Philip which went in off the post. Fifteen minutes from time Ilkeston felt unlucky to have a penalty given against them when Lavell White was adjusted to have handled. On a night when many games were postponed due to waterlogged pitches, the New Manor Ground was declared playable. Chances were few early on and Ilkeston’s best effort came from a Shaun Harrad shot that just cleared the crossbar on 13 minutes. Wisbech were content to defend in numbers and break out when the opportunity arose. Harrad was close again on 35 minutes with a shot on the turn which Sam Wilson managed to smother on the goal line but the breakthrough goal arrived four minutes later. It came from a throw-in on the right which was flicked on by Chris Robertson and headed home by Harrad. But before the Ilkeston fans had finished celebrating Wisbech were level through Philip’s wonderful strike. The  second half saw Wisbech becoming more adventurous and causing Ilkeston problems on the break. On 65 minutes McDonald forced Wilson to save well but Wisbech went up the other end and Durrant had to save. Tom Marshall’s shot from distance was tipped over and Reco Fyfe’s shot was deflected wide as Ilkeston started to build up pressure. Out of the blue Wisbech were awarded a penalty on 75 minutes. The ball hit Lavell White and deflected onto his arm but despite Ilkeston’s protests a penalty was given and Danny Setchell converted. Ilkeston made desperate efforts to rescue a point but through determination and aa little good fortune Wisbech held out. Dean Freeman was closest to equalising but was denied by a brilliant Sam Wilson save. The defeat ended Ilkeston’s unbeaten home record.

 ILKESTON TOWN  team:
1 Ross Durrant, 2 Lavell White, 3 Ryan Campbell-Gordon, 4 Tom Marshall, 5 Chris Robertson, 6 Dean Freeman, 7 Rod Orlando-Young, 8 Jermain Hollis, 9 Shaun Harrad, 10 Reece Fyfe, 11 Mason Lee.
Subs :  12 Kevin Da Silva Bastos, 14 Conor Green, 15 Scott Goodwin, 16 Massiah McDonald, 17 Nathan Smith.

Ilkeston gained revenge in the return fixture

Sat 25th January 2020  Northern Premier League, South East Division
Wisbech Town  0  Ilkeston Town  2
Ilkeston ended a seven match winless sequence with a goal in each half by Mason Lee and Kole Lambert but the victory was achieved through some excellent defending on a poor pitch. After a long time out through illness, Billy Bennett returned at full back and his incredible goal line clearance was as good as a goal as it kept Ilkeston’s lead intact at the start of the second half. Tom Marshall returned to his centre back role and defended with distinction as did the other defenders. In a physical encounter both sides had a player dismissed.Ilkeston made the early running and Daniel Melanius-Mullarkey’s cross found Kieran Wells whose header was just too high but on 17 minutes Ilkeston went ahead. Wisbech keeper Muhammed Otuyo couldn’t hold on to Fabian Smith’s free kick and Mason Lee was able to fire in the loose ball. Wisbech hit back with efforts from Tiago Nassunculo and Charley Sanders. As the game started to become more physical and animated the referee tried to calm things down by speaking to the occupants of both dugouts. Just before half time Ilkeston nearly went two up when a cracking shot by Wells rattled the Wisbech crossbar. Smith had a shot blocked but Wisbech immediately broke away and Kieran Fenton did well to avert the danger with an excellent tackle. The start of the second half saw Wisbech go very close to equalising. They looked certain to score but somehow Bennett scooped the ball off the line then a minute later Ross Durrant had to produce a stunning save from a blockbuster. As Wisbech continued to press, Fenton diverted a shot by Sanders for a corner. Wells had a chance for Ilkeston after brilliant play by Reco Fyfe and Jack Keeble’s shot was saved by Durrant as both teams looked to score the vital next goal. On 74 minutes Ilkeston were down to ten men when Wells received a second yellow for an over physical challenge but three minutes later Sanders received the same fate. On 82 minutes Kole Lambert chased a long ball forward from Fenton and slotted it past the advancing keeper to put Ilkeston two up. Wisbech’s deflation was visible after conceding the goal and Ilkeston were able to see out the remaining time.

ILKESTON TOWN team :
1 Ross Durrant, 2 Daniel Melanius-Mullarkey, 3 Billy Bennett, 4 Reece Fyfe, 5 Tom Marshall, 6 Kieran Fenton, 7 Fabian Smith, 8 Fernando Bell-Toxtle, 9 Kieran Wells, 14 Alex Marshall, 11 Mason Lee.
Subs : 12 Kole Lambert, 13/17 Richard Stainsby, 10 Jamie Walker, 15 Ben Squires.

Re: Wisbech Town will do better than last season

From this week's Wisbech Standard

More work to do vows Wisbech Town boss after impressive friendly run

Despite just one defeat in seven end-of-season friendlies, Wisbech Town still have plenty to do ahead of the new non-league season. That’s the view of boss Brett Whaley whose side wrapped up an impressive post-lockdown schedule with a 4-1 victory over step six outfit Huntingdon Town on Saturday.

“We feel like we’ve seen something positive over the seven games, but we haven’t put in a complete performance,” Whaley said.  “That shows me and Lenny (Chris Lenton, assistant) there is a lot of work to do.  “In patches we look a decent side, but there are patches where I thought they played better football than us and that shouldn’t happen.”

A healthy number of supporters greeted Wisbech at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium, where a Liam Adams brace as well as strikes from Eoin McQuaid and Dan Dougill confirmed the win, after two goals in two first half minutes.

The bank holiday fixture also gave a chance for some of Town’s new signings to shine, including ex-March Town striker Toby Allen and defender Ben Richards.

“Any new signings we make could potentially have had nine months without football, so I think these next three-and-a-half weeks are really important and we need to be ready,” Whaley said. “We feel like we know the squad now, we know the holes we’ve got, we know what we need to add if we can, but we feel we’re in a stronger position.”

Whaley said his squad will undertake a fitness programme before returning for pre-season training in around three weeks.    Wisbech also have eight planned pre-season friendlies to look forward to, with the likes of striker Avelino Vieira and club captain Liam Marshall due to return from injury.

There is a different aura around the club since lockdown eased, but like with squad places, Whaley is not getting complacent. “We’re starting afresh; nobody’s got a head-start because we didn’t do well enough last year,” he said. “We’re not going to be a side that’s going to win every week, so if you’re on the bench, you need to think ‘I’m going to get my opportunity and when I get it, I’ll take it’. “I think the boys that have come in and used to winning don’t think that way (dropping heads) as they’re used to carrying on and winning the games, so that has made a difference to us.”

                                                                      ***************************

I really hope that Wisbech do better this coming season. No one likes to see a team adrift at the bottom.
Wisbech have been the whipping boys over the last two curtailed seasons. The amount of travelling they have to do doesn't help.
