NPL round-up | Lancaster stay top, big win for FC United and Ilkeston snatch dramatic point
The Dolly Blues made it 12 games without defeat in the league, against a side widely fancied to be challenging for top spot before the season began. After a shock defeat against Whitby Town in midweek, Hednesford failed to find an immediate response but remain remain in the play-off places.
One of the most dramatic games of the afternoon came at Ilkeston Town, where the Robins snatched a remarkable point against Warrington Rylands. Despite being down to nine men at the time of their equaliser after a stoppage-time skirmish involving both benches led to red cards for Dylan Youmbi and Sam Essien, Robbie Fox's looping finish over Rylands goalkeeper Luke Pilling in the 101st minute saw the home side earn a 2-2 draw. The in-form Ben Hardcastle had earlier scored twice for the Blues, either side of Harvey Kirby-Moore's effort for Ilkeston. Still, Rylands were forced to settle for a draw - their seventh of the league campaign to date.
Meanwhile, FC United of Manchester picked up a big three points on their travels as Adam Le Fondre's early goal saw them past Gainsborough Trinity. Returning to league action for the first time in four weeks, Gainsborough came away empty-handed as the division's two best defences went head-to-head. In the end, it was FC United's backline which came out on top, recording an eighth clean sheet in 11 league games.
Another game with real intrigue came in the north-east, where Ashton United moved to within touching distance of the play-offs with a 2-1 win at Stockton Town. All goals came in the first half, with Darius Osei opening the scoring for Ashton. A wonderful strike from outside the area saw Josh Scott level things up for Stockton, but they would still come out on the wrong side of the result after former Warrington Town striker Enock Lusiama capitalised on a mix-up at the back to score the winner on his Robins debut. Saturday's result saw Stockton's unbeaten league start at the MAP Group UK Stadium come to an end.
Another who are just outside of the top five are Bamber Bridge, who recorded an impressive 2-0 win away at Whitby Town. Goals in either half from Kofi Moore and Jamie Allen proved to be enough for the Brig as they earned back-to-back wins and climbed above the Seasiders in the process. It proved to be a difficult afternoon for Whitby, who were reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time when Frankie Allen was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul on Ewan Bange.
Completing the top 10 after the latest round of fixtures are Cleethorpes Town, despite the Owls going down 2-1 at Rushall Olympic. Liam McAlinden's fine half-volley broke the deadlock in the second half, with Jack Burgess' close-range finish making it two. Adam Haw netted a consolation for Cleethorpes in the 86th minute as they failed to find a leveller in the time that remained.
Elsewhere, Stocksbridge Park Steels recorded their third win in a row, defeating Prescot Cables 2-1. Goals in either half from Oliwier Grzelak and Luke Rawson helped Steels continue their recent resurgence. Despite James Steele scoring his first goal for Cables, they were unable to prevent a first home league defeat of the season.
The highest-scoring game of the weekend saw Hebburn Town share the spoils with Leek Town after a six-goal thriller. In a game which saw both sides lead at points, Hebburn looked to be on course for all three-points deep into stoppage time. But Louis Potts' 96th minute header snatched a point for Leek, helping the Blues end a run of four straight league defeats. Hebburn remain 14th in the table, two points and two places above Leek.
At the Cal.Delivery Stadium, Warrington Town recorded a much-needed win at home to managerless Guiseley. Liam Brazier's first for the club saw the Yellows take a first-half lead, with midfielder Reece Daly arrowing home a second shortly after half-time. Paul Carden's side had chances to add to their lead as the game wore on, but in the end settled for a 2-0 win which saw them pick up just their second league victory of the season. They remain in the relegation zone, four points from safety, after Stocksbridge's win away at Prescot.
The final game of the weekend saw Morpeth Town defeat Workington 2-0 in a battle between the bottom two. First-half goals from Nic Bollado and Dan Myers steered Morpeth to just their second league win of the season. Saturday's result continued Workington's difficult run of form away from home - the Reds losing six of their seven league games away from Borough Park since the season began.
