OWLS FLY TO IMPRESSIVE ROAD WIN!
The Owls climbed to 6th place in the Premier Division table with a convincing 3-0 verdict at Ilkeston Town on Tuesday evening. Looking to build on the morale boosting weekend win, the visitors set about the task with gusto. However, despite looking the more likely side, Clee had to bide their time.O'Grady came closest, seeing a header deflected over the crossbar and then having a penalty appeal turned down by the official.
The breakthrough did arrive in the 36th minute though and it was worth the wait! A long ball was controlled by Andreucci, who cleverly laid-off a perfect feed to the onrushing Adam Haw. The forward did not hesitate, lashing a powerful strike into the far corner of the net. After the restart, Blunden planted a firm header just the wrong side of the upright, when handily placed near the penalty spot. This was not costly though, as the blue & black soon doubled their advantage. Recent-signing Ainley delivered an exquisite pass to split open a hesitant rearguard and Haw quickly capitalised, surging through the inside-right channel before lifting the ball over the keeper to claim his brace. There had been limited action for Battersby in the Owls' goal, which continued to be the case as the contest moved into the latter stages. In truth, any threat from the Robins had been truly snuffed out by a dominant defence, who went on to claim a deserved clean-sheet.It was left to last season's top-scorer Josh Walker to have the final word.
A delicate chip from Abbott was seized upon by Braithwaite. The sub ran to the by-line and squared for the lurking Walker to tap home. At the whistle, there was no real argument that the margin of success was merited - it had been an excellent road display!
