Re: Ilkeston v Histon - Sat 2nd Oct

Carvell's cross is too near the keeper and he cuts it out. Verma loses the ball and Histon nearly get one back the shot is just wide. At the other end Carvell shot is inches wide. Carvell's speedy runs is causing havoc.
Maguire header also just wide from Reid's corner.

Re: Ilkeston v Histon - Sat 2nd Oct

Credit to Histon. Woefully short on quality. But never gave up

Tough on them being put into our league from the Isthmian North. Much more travelling

Couple of meaty challenges should have been punished with yellows by an overly lenient ref. Their 9 & 8 gave five or 6 fouls away first half yet Maguire sees yellow for his first foul

Played some nice stuff and you can only beat what’s in front of you. Clean sheet and a boost to the goal difference. A good day at the office

It's difficult to know what to say to the opposing officials after we've beaten their team 8-0. One of them was clearly upset and was talking about the possibility of replacing the manager. The others seemed resigned to relegation and were considering what league they might be dumped in next time obviously not happy with being placed in the NPL Midlands Division this season. With the amount of travelling they have to do they are clearly disadvantaged.

As Dick said, the Histon players deserve some credit for keeping going when they were clearly second best. It took us a while to get our second goal but once we did, further goals came with regularity. I don't think i've seen so many chances created by us in a game and our attackers looked very impressive.

Good use of substitutes kept the pressure permanently on. I thought James Carvell’s late cameo appearance was outstanding while the visiting officials singled out Ollie Brown-Hill as our star man.

Re: Ilkeston v Histon - Sat 2nd Oct

Ilkeston Town  8  Histon  0
Histon were blown away by rampant Ilkeston who scored four goals in each half. The visitors, who are currently bottom of the table, stayed in the game for the first 30 minutes before finally capitulating in spectacular fashion conceding three goals in a nine minute spell.
An excellent Ilkeston move in the early moments ended with Remaye Campbell firing over but he made amends on 14 minutes when he bundled home a cross from Alex Troke. It stayed 1-0 until the 32nd minute when Ollie Brown-Hill created an opportunity for Troke to double the lead. Histon replied with a smart move which saw Rhys Thorpe test Ross Durrant but on 37 minutes Zak Goodson scored Ilkeston’s third. An own goal on 41 minutes put Ilkeston in an unassailable position by half time.
Five minutes into the second half Joe Maguire headed in Charlie Wakefield’s free kick. On the hour Brown-Hill set up Campbell for his second and it was almost a hat-trick a few minutes later when he fired inches wide. Troke scored Ilkeston’s seventh on 72 minutes and a Brown-Hill effort was just too high as Ilkeston looked for more goals.  Patrick Webb competed the rout on 82 minutes with a tap in after a great run by James Carvell created the opportunity..

In case you didn't know I have the privilege of looking after visiting officials on match days before the game, at half time and immediately after the game.

After yesterday's game I wasn't sure what I should say to the Histon officials. But massive credit to them, they came to me and congratulated Ilkeston on their performance. They also said Ilkeston was one of the best grounds they had visited and were full of praise for our facilities. I was truly humbled by their attitude following a 8 nil battering.

This is the wonderful world of Non League football.

Re: Ilkeston v Histon - Sat 2nd Oct

I stood behind the goal they were attacking second half with their fans. Very nice people indeed. No edge to them at all and, whilst disappointed with their performance never once got on their players backs

It’s tough for them and I don’t think the FA/ National League System people have done them any favours putting them in our league which helped bring about a mass exodus of their better players. But since when did the FA give a toss about the clubs eh?

A genuinely good club who I hope make it to the end of the season when they can return to a league commensurate with their budget and playing strength

Re: Ilkeston v Histon - Sat 2nd Oct

Yes, somewhat of a mismatch and a game you don’t learn a lot from. Couple of things.

I thought the new right-back, Tommy Williams, showed promise offensively (not really tested defensively). Showed good vision and played some good through balls and seemed to link up well with Zak Goodson.

I’m sure you get scouts everywhere, but Alex was telling me that a scout from Solihull Moors has watched our last 4 games. If so, who is he (presuming it’s a he!) looking at? Who could play at National League level, or more likely, who has the potential to play at National League level? Charlie Wakefield (for me our best player this season so far), Ross Durrant? Mitchell Tait? Remaye Campbell? Zak Goodson? Anyone else heard anything?

Re: Ilkeston v Histon - Sat 2nd Oct

I didn't know about the Solihull Moors scout but that is that is a downside of doing well. Scouts always watch the teams who are dong well to see if there is a particular player who is making it happen. Scouts from bigger clubs (Football League) are usually only interested in young players who can be developed.
Most scouts like to get in without paying so request a free pass from the home club. The club then knows that some player is being watched but don't necessarily know who.
Before Che Adams was sold there were dozens of scouts watching him for weeks, home and away.
